Duke basketball: Marvin Bagley III makes back-to-back statements

In this story:
Detroit Pistons center Marvin Bagley III, who hasn't exactly lived up to lofty expectations as a pro since going No. 2 overall at the 2018 NBA Draft following his sensational Duke basketball campaign, recently missed almost two months with a fractured right hand. It was another in a long line of unfortunate setbacks.

But Bagley's two performances since returning have been of the statement-making variety, even though both came in losing efforts. Not only have his stat lines signaled the 23-year-old's determination to validate the eight-figures-per-year contract he signed in the summer, but they are also historically productive for a Pistons reserve.
According to a tweet from the franchise, Bagley "is the second Piston with back-to-back 20-point, 10-rebound games off the bench in franchise history, joining Terry Tyler in 1978."
He recorded 21 points, 19 rebounds, and one block across 28 minutes off the bench in Detroit's 95-91 home loss to the Toronto Raptors on Saturday. And he followed that up with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and one assist in only 24 minutes on the floor in Monday night's 117-106 loss at the Charlotte Hornets.

It's worth noting that the other points-rebounds double-double performer in Monday's bout was another former Duke basketball big man in Hornets rookie starter Mark Williams. He finished with 15 points and 11 boards in 30 minutes.

Although Marvin Bagley III is averaging respectable numbers this season with his 11.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per outing, he's played in only 27 games for the Eastern Conference last-place Pistons (15-47). He sat out the first 13 contests of the season with an MCL sprain.
Detroit next hosts the Chicago Bulls at 7 p.m. ET Wednesday.
