Duke Basketball One-And-Done Getting the Boot in New York

The number of Duke basketball talents on an NBA contract has dropped to 23.

After averaging 11.5 points in the final season of Duke basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski's career, Trevor Keels went No. 42 overall to the New York Knicks at the 2022 NBA Draft and inked a two-way contract with the franchise. But he played only three games as a rookie, totaling eight minutes and three points.

Of course, that is no surprise to folks who believed he wasn't ready for the professional ranks and should have remained with the Blue Devils for at least a sophomore campaign.

And on Monday night, The Athletic's Fred Katz reported that the Knicks are waiving the 6-foot-5, 220-pound guard.

At least for now, it appears Keels might go down as a one-and-done in college and the NBA.

The Knicks retain Keels' G League rights. Still, he could sign a two-way or Exhibit 10 contract with another franchise leading up to training camp, which gets underway in late September.

However, given his relative lack of production in recent Summer League action — averaging 5.8 points in 25.9 minutes per game while shooting 25.6 percent from the field — it seems unlikely the Blue Devil will land somewhere else anytime soon. No, chances are he spends the entire season with the Westchester Knicks.

In other words, the following 3-point shot, Keels' first NBA bucket, could be the last points he ever scores in the league.

Then again, it's worth noting he's still only 19 years old, so time is on his side when it comes to further developing his game.

With Trevor Keels disappearing from the list, as things stand, 23 Duke basketball products are on an NBA contract for next season.
