Colts Name Former Gators QB Anthony Richardson Preseason Week 1 Starter

Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen has named No. 4 overall pick Anthony Richardson as the starting quarterback for preseason week one.

Former Florida Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson will trot out as the Indianapolis Colts starter in their first preseason game against Buffalo on Saturday, head coach Shane Steichen shared with media on Thursday.

In his first and final campaign as a full-time starter at Florida, Richardson displayed impressive athleticism and creativity to pair with a strong arm while leading the Gators' passing attack. He accounted for 2,549 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions on 53.8% completion in 2022, adding 654 yards and nine touchdowns on 103 carries.

Despite his inconsistent production, the unreplicated traits the 6-foot-4, 245-pound Richardson displays at the quarterback position created pronounced pre-draft intrigue.

The Colts, sitting at No. 4, took the swing on the high-ceiling prospect, locking down their quarterback of the future.

He's exceeded early expectations to stand out during Colts training camp,  commanding a healthy dose of first-team snaps. He's indicated a smoother-than-expected transition to the NFL, placing him firmly in the starting quarterback conversation alongside Gardner Minshew for week one.

Earlier this week, Steichen emphasized the importance of reps for the young but talented passer to expedite his progression.

"You get repetitions, and you do things more and more, you're going to get more comfortable," Steichen said. "I think he's gaining confidence in the system and gaining confidence with his teammates, and when you have that and you have the talent he has, it's usually a good thing."

As a result, the rookie earns the nod as the head signal caller against the Bills on Saturday.

His performance in the first week of the preseason will likely play a crucial role in winning the opportunity to lead Indianapolis onto the field against Jacksonville on Sept. 10.
