Gators recruiting has taken an unexpected turn heading into the weekend after a promising cornerback decommits from the class of 2021.

The Florida Gators seemingly lost a commitment overnight on Friday, this time cornerback Clinton Burton Jr. who announced via social media he would be committing to the Boston College Eagles instead.

"Building my legacy ..." Burton said on Twitter.

Burton originally committed to the Gators only a few months following his unofficial visit to the university last year. Announcing his commitment to Florida on September 2nd of 2019, Burton had seemingly never backed away from that decision even as the Gators' defensive back class in 2021 grew larger.

The Baltimore (MD.) product has had plenty of Power 5 offers, including the Gators, Alabama, Clemson, Penn State, Virginia and Michigan.

While many assumed when Burton disclosed that his recruitment was shutting down, a little over a week ago, he meant he was locked in with Florida, it appears that was not the case and Burton had planned to make an announcement to his new landing spot at a later day.

Florida has not been shy in recruiting cornerbacks during this cycle as they've already landed three other commitments from defensive backs including cornerback Kamar Wilcoxson and safeties Dakota Mitchell and Jordan Young. The Gators will also be expecting more commitments down the line as top-tier cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. is squarely on their radar along with safety Donovan McMillon.

Earlier this week, Burton was named as a candidate for SI All-American's inaugural team for the 2021 season, along with several other Gators commitments and targets alike

Here is what SI All-American had to say about Burton:

Burton has the makings of Florida’s next freshman star at cornerback. He has the size, speed and quickness to play on the outside or in the slot depending on the coach’s preference. Questionable ball skills could keep him from putting up big numbers, but Burton profiles as a near-lockdown cover man in the SEC regardless.

Well, it appears things have changed as Burton is moving on and will more than likely expect more early playing time initially at Boston College than perhaps at Florida.
