Defensive backs coach Corey Raymond remains busy on the recruiting trail in his new role.

Taking charge of the Gators' secondary in its entirety, the renowned recruiter and developer is hitting the ground running to bolster the cornerbacks and safety groups this cycle. He's already landed a commit from Berrien (Nashville, Ga.) High safety Josiah Davis, and is in a favorable position for several backend prospects this spring.

On Thursday, Raymond received promising news regarding a priority target of his as Waco (Texas) cornerback Kobe Black released his top 11.

The Connally High five-star included the Gators alongside Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Nebraska, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M and USC.

Black, ranked as the No. 3 cornerback and No. 15 player overall in the 2024 class, cut nearly two-thirds of his extensive offer sheet (30 teams) out of the picture moving forward. The considerable trim still leaves just under a dozen schools remaining but closes the window to present a narrowed focus for the teams who have stood out the most.

However, perhaps joining the party late by offering him on Jan. 11, the Gators have made an adequate impression on Black to remain in contention.

Florida's DB coach is likely a substantial factor in that decision, given his history of producing players to the professional level during his time at LSU.

Current Gators DB Jason Marshall Jr. has the potential to join that star-stuffed list with a promising 2023 season. Raymond believes Marshall is well on his way.

"Honestly, just being a pro, doing everything the right way," he shared about Florida's top cornerback when asked about his largest point of improvement from last year. "Working extra, working hard at practice, doing all those little things. He's doing that. It's like he's ready to be a professional and he's working like that to be a professional."

That example could help lure a high-caliber talent like Black to Gainesville.

Standing at 6-foot, 190 pounds, the Lone Star State prospect presents a near college-ready frame as a rising senior in high schools. Possessing long limbs with fluid movement skills and versatility while in the secondary.

His makeup presents the length, speed and athleticism Raymond beckons for when pursuing talent for his unit. He's one of the most polished pieces in the class but is moldable enough to serve as a near-immediately starter at the collegiate level.

As a result, Black sits as a top cornerback target for the Gators this cycle. However, landing him will take substantial bargaining as in-state schools, Alabama, LSU, Ohio State and others also pursue him valiantly.
