Florida State Loses Veteran Guard to NCAA Transfer Portal

The Seminoles finally see a player enter the portal after their season concluded over three weeks ago.

Florida State Guard Caleb Mills has announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal. The 6-foot-5 redshirt junior spent two seasons playing for Florida State after coming in from Houston and averaged 12.8 PPG and 3.0 APG in his time in Tallahassee.

Mills is a very talented and shifty player, but never quite fit FSU needed as a guy who could be shot-happy at times and wasn’t strong enough to play through contact at some points. He’s going to be successful wherever he finishes his career if he goes somewhere that can use his natural talents in a better fashion.

The North Carolina native is the first player from Florida State's roster to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal since the season concluded over three weeks ago. More departures are expected to follow in the near future.

The former AAC Preseason Player of the Year transferred to Florida State midway through his sophomore season after an ankle injury but was a little too 1-on-1 for FSU’s liking. However, they’re going to be missing his experience for sure. He started 54 games in his time in Tallahassee; no one else on the roster has more starts at FSU than him.

Leonard Hamilton will likely be looking for another experienced guard to come in to replace Mills, and they’ll be looking for someone that’s a little more natural as a passer and leader. Mills could have the ball on a string as a ball handler, but his vision wasn’t always there as a natural passer when he’d play the 1.

Mills’ best game in a Florida State uniform came in 2022 in a game against Louisville, where he scored 27 points on 9/16 shooting.
