Budding Star Keon Coleman Ready To Work Alongside FSU's Deep Wide Receiver Unit

Coleman is looking forward to competing with the Seminoles ahead of what could be a special season for the program.

Keon Coleman was a four star prospect from the 2021 class and committed to Michigan State straight out of high school. Last season, he suited up for his second year with the Spartans and recorded 58 receptions for 798 yards with eight touchdowns.

Despite his promising sophomore campaign, Coleman elected to enter the transfer portal in April. He immediately garnered the interest of a myriad of schools across the college football landscape, eventually narrowing his list down to just two: Ole Miss and Florida State. After taking visits to both schools, Coleman announced his intentions to transfer to Tallahassee in early May.

As part of a press conference to introduce Florida State football’s newcomers, budding star Keon Coleman took to the podium for the first time. Coleman was asked about his decision to transfer to Florida State, his experience during the recruitment process, his connection with quarterback Jordan Travis, whether or not he will continue his basketball career at FSU, and a host of other topics.

"First, just the culture that they've been building over the past few years. They kept the recruitment out of high school, they were recruiting me pretty hard," Coleman said on why he chose the Seminoles. "They have a great quarterback, great receiver room, and most of all, I love the coaching staff. They got 90% of the team coming back this year so we got a chance to do something very special and I just wanted to be a part of that."

"I mean everybody wants to win and everybody wants to make big plays for those teams that's going to win," Coleman continued. "Competing for the national championship, that's the ultimate goal."

A big reason that he honed in on the Seminoles is due to the relationship he built with head coach Mike Norvell and the rest of the staff out of high school. That's helped make his transition to Florida State even easier.

"It really was because coach Dugans, coach Norvell, coach Atkins, I loved those guys coming out," Coleman said. "I loved what they were trying to do and things just didn't work out on the front end but it happened for a reason this time. They made it very smooth, knowing that I had previous relationships with them, and coach YAC also."

It also didn't hurt that Florida State will field one of the top quarterbacks in the country in Heisman contender Jordan Travis. Coleman was looking to play with a signal-caller that can get him to the NFL level following this season.

"Really in the recruiting process, there wasn't much to be said," Coleman said. "The tape speaks for itself really and everybody wants to play with a great quarterback, like I said earlier. He does some very good things very well and I would love for him to be throwing me the ball too."

Though he only recently arrived in town, Coleman is already going through workouts with the team. He's getting used to the heat after playing up north the last couple of years.

"It's been fun for the most part getting to go through the grind and the hardship with those guys, my teammates," Coleman said. "I think really the biggest adjustment is the heat. It ain't too crazy but it's been fun for real."

Coleman is joining a room that already has plenty of proven talents as well as some promising youngsters. He believes that the group will be as good as the sum of its parts.

"Really just to come in and compete, push the competition in the room. Help everybody get better at their individual things and just grow overall as a receiver room," Coleman said. "We aspire to be the best in the nation that's pretty much what we're going to try to do. Coming in and competing, another guy that can do things pretty good. The better the room, the better each individual is."

Be sure to keep an eye on Keon Coleman going forward, if you weren't already doing so. While the numbers speak for themselves, the man underneath the helmet is just as impressive. He answers questions and carries himself with an air of maturity, confidence and a "business as always" attitude. Coleman is the first to tell you that he's focused on competing and getting to work.

Despite his intensity as it relates to his on-field presence, you can tell Coleman relishes the opportunity to be with the 'Noles, he values the relationships he has formed already and those he will continue to develop, and he even cracked a few smiles when talking about adjusting to the heat and when asked about continuing his basketball career at Florida State.

The wide receiver room stands to benefit from the addition of Coleman both on and off the field. Even though he's undergoing an adjustment and "getting accustomed to how they do things here," Keon Coleman is already a veteran presence for the Seminoles. "I'm a natural born leader," said Coleman, and based on his press conference alone, you're inclined to believe him.
