Ex-Florida State Five-Star Cornerback Staying In Tallahassee To Continue College Career

The former top recruit is getting a second chance to showcase his talent.

The NCAA Transfer Portal doesn't just provide an avenue for players to move around for massive NIL deals. It's also a way for someone to earn a second if their stint at a program doesn't work out for whatever reason.

Former Florida State cornerback Demorie Tate was a five-star prospect in the 2020 class. Despite his immense amount of talent, he struggled to consistently get on the field with the Seminoles and chose to enter the portal following the 2022 season. However, Tate didn't end up landing with a program, an increasingly more common occurrence, and sat out this past year.

On Thursday evening, Tate earned an opportunity closeby to his former program to continue his college career. He'll be sticking around in Tallahassee after signing with FAMU. It's expected that Tate will have one to two years of eligibility remaining.

The Florida native spent three years with the Seminoles after joining the program as the top signee in Mike Norvell's inaugural class. Most of his contributions came on the scout team but Tate did make one appearance in garnet and gold. He didn't record any statistics in 14 snaps in FSU's 59-3 win against UMass in 2021.

Tate was regarded as the No. 22 overall prospect, the No. 3 CB, and the No. 4 recruit in the state of Florida in the 2020 class according to 247Sports. He competed in the 2019 The Opening Finals and was a 2020 Under Armour All-American. Tate also played basketball and ran track for Freedom High School, posting a personal best of 10.91 seconds in the 100 meter during his junior year.

FAMU finished 12-1 and defeated Howard in the Celebration Bowl in head coach Willie Simmons' sixth year with the program. Simmons has compiled a 45-13 overall record, including a 32-5 mark in the MEAC. The Rattlers will face FBS programs such as Miami and Troy in 2024.
