Former Florida State Quarterback Heading Back West To Continue College Career

The former Seminole is on his way back to the West Coast.

There have been at least 14 players on Florida State's roster to announce their intentions to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal since last week. Once again, the program will have a lot of outgoing departures that the Seminoles will be trying to replace with their high school recruiting class and incoming transfer additions.

On Thursday afternoon, another former member of the program announced their next destination. According to his social media, redshirt freshman quarterback AJ Duffy will be heading back to the West Coast to play for San Diego State and new head coach Sean Lewis.

Duffy is expected to have three years of eligibility remaining to utilize with the Aztecs. He spent most of his time in Tallahassee as a reserve behind Jordan Travis, Tate Rodemaker, and Brock Glenn. Duffy only made one appearance this past season, rushing three times for five yards in the home opening win against Southern Miss in September.

The California native saw action in three games during his first season with the program. He completed 2/7 passes for 26 yards with one touchdown while rushing one time for five yards. Duffy was a Seminole Scholar and ACC Honor Roll member.

Duffy originally signed with Florida State as a four-star prospect in the 2022 class following a stint at IMG Academy. He's the eighth member of the class (Duffy, Sam McCall, Bishop Thomas, Antavious Woody, Rodney Hill, Daughry Richardson, Qae'Shon Sapp, Ayobami Tifase) to move on from the program less than two years after signing. That means nearly half of the high school prospects from #Tribe22 have departed.

Lewis takes over at San Diego State after a season in Colorado as offensive coordinator under Deion Sanders. The Aztecs will be losing senior quarterback Jalen Mayden to graduation at the conclusion of the year.

Florida State is projected to return two scholarship quarterbacks for the 2024 season; redshirt senior Tate Rodemaker and redshirt freshman Brock Glenn. The Seminoles are also expected to add five-star signal-caller Luke Kromenhoek as part of a star-studded recruiting class. The program will host transfer quarterbacks DJ Uiagalelei and Cameron Ward for official visits this weekend.

Outside of Duffy, the Seminoles have seen running back Rodney Hill, running back CJ Campbell, tight end Markeston Douglas, tight end Preston Daniel, offensive lineman Bless Harris, offensive lineman Thomas Schrader, offensive lineman Daughtry Richardson, offensive lineman Qae'shon Sapp, defensive tackle Malcolm Ray, defensive tackle Ayobami Tifase, linebacker DJ Lundy, linebacker Dylan Brown-Turner, and kicker Tyler Keltner enter the portal.

Star defensive end Patrick Payton previously declared his intentions to do so but removed the references on social media and never officially appeared in the database.
