Former FSU Football Staffer Hired By Pittsburgh Steelers To Coach Defensive Backs

The Steelers are hiring a new assistant coach who spent the 2023 season in Tallahassee.

Florida State has seen a couple of members of its off-field staff depart for promotions this offseason. Director of Scouting (offense) John Garrett (Duke) and Graduate Assistant (offense) Cooper Williams (Missouri) were among the names to move on.

When the Seminoles unveiled their 2024 spring media guide on Monday, a couple of familiar faces were missing such as Senior Defensive Analyst Shane Burnham, Volunteer Analyst (defense) Anthony Midget, and Student Assistant Coach (offense) Nick O'Leary.

On Wednesday morning, The Pittsburgh Steelers announced that they were hiring Midget as their Assistant Secondary Coach. He'll be working under longtime Head Coach Mike Tomlin and Secondary Coach Grady Brown.

Midget is coming off his first stint at the college level in a decade after spending one season at Florida State. He served alongside Defensive Coordinator Adam Fuller and Defensive Backs Coach Patrick Surtain Sr. while evaluating practices, helping with scouting, and various other roles.

Prior to his time in Tallahassee, Midget worked for the Tennessee Titans for three seasons as Defensive Backs Coach. His time in the NFL began with the Houston Texans where he spent six years coaching in the secondary, including leading the position group during his final two seasons with the franchise.

Midget has over 20 years of coaching experience across the NFL, college, and high school levels. He worked at his alma mater, Virginia Tech, as a graduate assistant prior to serving as the defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator at Georgia State from 2008-11. He added the role of defensive coordinator in 2012. Midget was hired by Penn State as safeties coach the following season before making the leap to the NFL.

The Florida native played his college ball for the Hokies from 1996-1999, capping off his career with a loss to Florida State in the Sugar Bowl for the National Championship. He was named first-team All-Big East in 1999. Midget was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the fifth round of the 2000 NFL Draft. He also spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before beginning his coaching career.
