Miami Quarterback Suffers 'Significant' Arm Injury, Hospitalized After Loss To Florida State
Florida State overcame a deficit in the third quarter to reel off its third consecutive victory over the Miami Hurricanes. The annual rivalry matchup featured plenty of physicality throughout the contest as the Seminoles and Hurricanes battled for the right to stake claim over the Sunshine State.
With Miami driving to potentially tie the game late in the fourth quarter, true freshman quarterback Emory Williams was injured while scrambling for a fourth-down conversion. As he approached the first-down marker near the sideline, Williams collided with multiple defenders, including Jared Verse, DJ Lundy, and Tatum Bethune.
Williams stayed down following the play and appeared to be in a significant amount of pain. Replay showed the young signal-caller holding his left arm at an awkward angle. After being surrounded by medical staff from both teams, Williams had an air cast placed on his arm before being carted off the field.
Following the contest, Miami head coach Mario Cristobal revealed that Williams suffered a 'significant' injury and had to be taken to a local hospital.
"Yes, it was a significant injury," Cristobal said after the game. "He's at the local hospital and we're waiting on word for him."
It was an unfortunate conclusion to Williams' second start of the season. He kept Miami in the game with timely plays, including an 85-yard touchdown to Jacolby George in the final frame to cut the deficit to seven. He finished 8/23 for 175 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions while rushing five times for -7 yards.
Cristobal called it a 'gutsy' performance for a quarterback who has shown the signs to be the potential future of the Hurricanes.
"Gutsy, tough. Was a little bit nervous early when it first started then settled in, made some big throws, some gutsy runs as well, particularly the one where he got hurt," Cristobal said. "He also had the scramble where he got the first down and we ended up tying the game, kept the drive going. All in all, I know statistically it doesn't exactly look good, but he made spectacular throws to Jacolby and made some other key throws, some throws you'd like to have back. Anyways, played well."
Veteran Tyler Van Dyke ended up replacing Williams. He was picked off for the 11th time in five games shortly after taking the field as cornerback Jarrian Jones sealed Florida State's victory.
The Seminoles return to action on Saturday, November 18 against North Alabama for their home finale.
