The Seminoles entered the day with the possibility of landing up to four commitments. That number has been slashed in half after a pair of prospects that officially visited Tallahassee at the end of June committed to other programs.
According to their respective social media pages, four-star wide receiver James Madison II has pledged to Missouri while four-star tight end Kylan Fox landed at UCF. Both prospects were at Florida State last weekend ahead of the recruiting dead period.
Despite Madison II and Fox electing to play their college careers elsewhere, this isn't a big blow to the Seminoles for a multitude of reasons.
First off, Florida State is trending for four-star wide receiver Elijah Moore, who will commit later Tuesday between the Seminoles and Ohio State. Moore named FSU his leader following his official visit last weekend. It's worth noting that he was on campus at the same time as Madison II.
That means the coaching staff was able to evaluate both prospects in person during the same time period. It appears that the Seminoles believe Moore has more upside and brings a different skill set to the room than what the program already has. He's a dynamic prospect that can dice up defenses in the red zone and make plays on special teams.
It feels like this one came down to numbers in the grand scheme of things. With a quartet of four-star wide receivers already committed, the Seminoles were only willing to bring in one of Moore and Madison II. The former has been a priority for a long time as head coach Mike Norvell and wide receivers coach Ron Dugans have been recruiting Moore since he was in eighth grade.
The Seminoles remain in a solid spot for a pair of five-star wide receivers as well in Joshisa Trader and Cameron Coleman. Both prospects unofficially visited Florida State in June and are expected to officially visit the program at some point in the fall. The Miami game weekend has been pegged as a possible date.
As for Fox, Florida State already has the No. 1 tight end in the country committed in five-star prospect Landen Thomas. After flipping Thomas from Georgia back in April, the coaching staff explored adding a second tight end to the class. Fox developed into the top option as a running mate alongside Thomas.
After all, the two are friends and both hail from the Peach State. The Seminoles were the perceived favorite going into the final weekend of June but Fox began to trend to UCF shortly after his trip to Tallahassee. He'll have an easier path to future playing time with the Knights and can be one of the crown jewels of their 2024 class.
It remains to be seen if Florida State revisits the position with zero scholarship seniors at tight end on the roster. It's possible that Jaheim Bell explores the NFL following the 2023 season while Brian Courtney was recently listed as a tight end/linebacker. With that being said, it might not be worth pushing for a second high school prospect if Markeston Douglas, Kyle Morlock, and Preston Daniel will all be back in the fold.
Stay tuned on Tuesday evening for potential fireworks in Tallahassee. Four-star wide receiver Elijah Moore will announce at 5:30 p.m. EST while three-star safety Rydarrius 'Red' Morgan is scheduled to commit at 7:30 p.m. EST.
