BREAKING: Dell McGee Named Georgia State's Next Head Coach

Georgia football running backs coach Dell McGee has been named the next head coach of the Georgia State Panthers football program.

Rumblings began earlier in the week of some of the names that could potentially be named the next head football coach at Georgia State. It is now being reported that Dell McGee has officially been offered the job and is expected to accept, per 247sports, Matt Zenitz.

The Panthers' head coaching gig opened up after Shawn Elliot recently decided to make the move to South Carolina to be their tight ends coach. McGee was then quickly linked as someone that both parties were mutually interested in and the news became official today.

McGee has been a part of the Georgia football program since 2016 when Kirby Smart was first hired by the program. After three seasons as the running backs coach for the Bulldogs, he was then promoted to assistant head coach as well. In 2019 he took over as the team's run game coordinator and has held that title ever since. Prior to arriving in Athens, he spent time at Auburn and Georgia Southern and started out in the Georgia high school football landscape at several programs.

He played college football at Auburn from 1992-1995 and would have a brief stint in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals and the Detroit Lions and then a few years in the Arena Football League and the XFL.

McGee had immense success in Athens as both a position coach and a recruiter. Outside of his role as the running backs coach, McGee quickly asserted himself as one of the premier recruiters on the trail in all of college football. He helped the Bulldogs land a litany of elite recruits over the years, players outside of his own position group on both sides of the football.
