How Dillion Bell Can Become Kirby Smart's Best Recruiting Pitch

For the past few years, Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs have been at the forefront of success in college football. After all, the team is on its way to breaking the SEC consecutive wins record, while in the hopes of three-peating national titles. But while the Bulldogs have excelled at virtually everything they have done in the past few seasons, there is one "weakness" that the team's critics are still looking to exploit.

Recruiting and developing talent has never been an issue for Kirby Smart-led Georgia teams. The Bulldogs have consistently brought in four and five-star talent each year and seemingly "reload" with stars after every season, while simultaneously shattering NFL Draft records.

Though, while the Dawgs certainly produce some of the most talented rosters in college football, they seem to have trouble recruiting the same level of "elite talent" when it comes to the receiver position.

Now, this isn't an article that's saying "Georgia doesn't have good receivers" or that it "can't compete with Alabama's and Ohio State's of the world" when it comes to recruiting. In fact, the way the Bulldogs have developed the talent of the room is an impressive feat, to say the least. But the team has yet to sign a consensus 5-star at the wide receiver position under Kirby Smart. Causing many to ask, "Why do elite receivers not go to Georgia?"

For starters, counter-recruiting has played a major role. The Bulldogs' lack of first-round picks and 1,000-yard receivers has allowed other teams (like Alabama and Ohio State) to pitch to recruits that their talents won't be as utilized at a school like Georgia. The Bulldogs also have not used the wide receiver position as prominently as others over recent years, with their leading receiver having been a tight end for two consecutive seasons — albeit Brock Bowers is the greatest tight end in the program's history.

Enter Dillion Bell, a 3-star receiver from Houston, Texas who has garnered national attention following his game against the Tennessee Volunteers where he both caught and threw for a touchdown. Bell's utilization this season has become a major contributor to the Bulldogs' offensive success and has drawn comparisons to the NFL's Deebo Samuel. Samuel, a player who has been used in both the running and passing game is one of the NFL's highest-paid players at the position.

With some of the most important games of the season coming down the stretch and Bell set to return for the 2024 season. The Bulldogs' receiver could not only become an even larger part of Georgia's offense but could also become a major recruiting pitch for Kirby Smart.

Should Bell's multi-faceted use continue to turn the heads of national analysts, it is not far-fetched to assume that Bell will have an excellent chance of becoming a first-round pick. Not only this but his unique usage in the Bulldogs' offense can also become an excellent recruiting pitch for highly talented athletes moving forward.
