REACTION: What Does Georgia Do Without Bowers?

Georgia is currently (7-0) and entering their bye week, so, what does this multi-week injury mean for Georgia?

Georgia's star tight end, and arguably their best football player, Brock Bowers sustained an ankle injury Saturday afternoon in the second quarter of their 37 to 20 win over Vanderbilt, and per a statement released by the school Monday, Bowers will be undergoing surgery to repair a high-ankle sprain.

Georgia is currently (7-0) and entering their bye week, so, what does this multi-week injury mean for Georgia?

Timetable: Assuming Brock Bowers has the "standard" recovery time for what is known as the Tight-Rope ankle surgery — a procedure performed to increase the rehabilitation and repair to the ligaments damaged during a high-ankle sprain — Bowers is expected to be out anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks.

*Timeline of 4 to 6 weeks is based on previous examples cited by Kirby Smart in reference to tight-rope procedures.*

Georgia's Remaining Schedule (Weeks post-injury)

  • 10/21 - BYE (One-week post-injury)
  • 10/28 - vs Florida (Jacksonville, Fl) (TWO weeks post-injury)
  • 11/4 - vs Missouri (THREE weeks post-injury)
  • 11/11 - vs Ole Miss (FOUR weeks post-injury)
  • 11/18 - @ Tennessee (FIVE weeks post-injury)
  • 11/25 - @ Georgia Tech (SIX weeks post-injury)

Georgia's TE Depth Chart Remaining

When Bowers went down on Saturday, Georgia went from being an almost exclusively 12-personnel offense — two tight ends on the field — to playing mostly 11 personnel. However, when they needed to remain a 12pp football team, it was freshman Lawson Luckie who joined Oscar Delp on the field for Georgia. After Luckie, who just returned from a tight-rope surgery himself, Georgia will look to another freshmen in the form of Pearce Spurlin.

Both Luckie and Spurlin were highly-touted prospects in the 2023 recruiting cycle. Luckie, a 4-star out of Norcross high school committed to Georgia over Alabama. Spurlin, another 4-star prospect himself was one of Georgia's longest standing commits in the 2023 class.
