Georgia Baseball's Slate Alford Named SEC Co-Player of the Week

Georgia Baseball's Slate Alford has been named the SEC's Co-Player of the Week after his series performance against UNC Asheville.

The Diamond Dawgs started their 2024 campaign this past weekend by hosting UNC Asheville in a season-opening three-game series. This is the program's first season under head coach Wes Johnson and he is off to a fast start with his new team as Georgia swept the series after winning the final game on Sunday.

The Bulldogs were an offensive powerhouse for the entire weekend tallying 38 total runs over the span of three games while only allowing seven total thanks to a shutout performance from Georgia's pitching staff on Sunday. The final two games of the series were called early due to mercy rule and it helped the Bulldogs get the Wes Johnson head coaching era at Georgia off to a strong start.

One of the top performers of the weekend for Georgia was infielder Slate Alford, who transferred to Georgia from Mississippi State this past offseason, and his acquisition is already paying off in a big way. He smashed three homeruns, earned six hits and tallied 9 RBIs over the three-game stretch. His overall weekend stats finished with a .429 batting average, a .500 on-base percentage and racked up 15 total bases over the weekend. He batted in the lead-off spot in all three games for the Bulldogs and helped get the bats rolling early in all three outings.

After his stellar performance, Alford earned the honor of being named Co-player of the week in the SEC alongside LSU's Hayden Travinski. A great start to the season for the SEC transfer.

Georgia will travel to Georgia State for a single-game matchup on Tuesday and then return home for another weekend series against Northern Kentucky before they take on an assortment of single-game out-of-conference opponents the following week.
