Diamond Dawgs Running Hot Heading into SEC Play

The Georgia baseball program is arguably hotter than any other college baseball program as they close in on SEC play.

The Georgia baseball program is arguably hotter than any other college baseball program as they close in on SEC play.

Georgia baseball has just one out-of-conference matchup left on the schedule against Iowa on Tuesday before they face off against their first SEC opponent. The Bulldogs currently sit with an overall record of 16-1 under head coach Wes Johnson in his first season at the helm. They may not be ranked but you might have a harder time finding a hotter team in college baseball right now.

The Diamond Dawgs recently just wrapped up a four-game weekend series against Northern Colorado in which they earned the sweep. Part of this is due to the team having hit six grand slams over their last six games. Over the weekend, the Bulldogs outscored Northern Colorado 55-9, which has become a trend for the ball club this season. Scoring runs in bunches.

Georgia currently has eight different batters who have played in at least 10 games this year and hold a batting average of .300 or more on the season. Six different players also have four or more home runs on the season despite only having played just 17 games so far. The team ranks 6th in runs scored (184), 1st in home runs hit (48), 3rd in RBIs (174) and 11th for batting average (.338) in all of college baseball.

While the team as a whole has contributed to the offensive success, Charlie Condon has been at the forefront and has been playing better than anyone else in the sport. He ranks first in the country in virtually every single hitting statistic and is batting an immaculate .565 at the plate. He came into the season listed as one of the top three MLB draft prospects and he has showcased that and more during the 2024 season.

As far as pitching goes for the Bulldogs, the staff as a whole holds a 3.73 ERA, struck out 175 batters and teams have a batting average of .217. Coach Johnson has rolled out a litany of names onto this mound this season, and those in-game reps might pay off for them down the stretch.

The only questions that remain about this year's Georgia baseball team are if the bats will stay hot against SEC opponents and if the pitching will be able to hold up down the stretch. If the answer to both of those questions is yes, then Georgia will have a great shot at making a postseason run this season. But even if it doesn't, there's no denying the fact that the Bulldogs have been one of the more entertaining teams to watch this season.

The Bulldogs will play their first conference series on the road against Kentucky this coming weekend.
