Position Battles: Who Will be Georgia's "X" Receiver for 2023?

As spring practice continues, we take a look at who Georgia's go-to pass catcher could be for the 2023 season

The Georgia Bulldogs offense underwent (and is still going through) a massive overhaul heading into the 2023 season. After winning their second straight national title, the Bulldogs have been tasked with replacing an offensive coordinator, a veteran quarterback, a running back, and a handful of offensive linemen. The many departures have led to a plethora of position battles taking place throughout spring practice.

But another position that fans may not realize is up for grabs is the "X" receiver in Georgia's offense. Primarily, the "X" acts as the outside receiver in an offense and is typically the biggest downfield threat.

Prior to his departure via the transfer portal in the offseason, AD Mitchell was anticipated to hold this position for the Bulldogs. But with the Texas native back in his home state, the position is now wide open for the taking.

Veteran receiver Marcus Rosemary-Jacksaint stepped up in a major way during the 2022 season at the position and had a multitude of impact plays during the regular season. Speedster Arian Smith also proved to be a valuable target for Georgia as one of the most dangerous deep threats in the country.

But while there is plenty of returning talent on this year's roster, it seems that the transfer receivers Georgia added in the offseason are poised to make an immediate impact for the 2023 season. Dominic Lovett, a transfer from Missouri had multiple 100-yard outings with the Tigers in 2022 has been taking a majority of his reps at the Z and slot receiver positions. While Rara Thomas, a transfer from Mississippi State who brought in an impressive seven touchdowns as the Bulldogs leading receiver in 2022 has reportedly been extremely impressive in spring camp thus far at the "X" position.

While the regular season is still months away and Kirby Smart's roster is typically fluid throughout the season. It appears that Rara Thomas and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint currently have excellent opportunities to become the Bulldog's "X" receiver come the fall.
