Spring Needs: Can Carson Beck Pull Away From the Competition in Georgia's QB Battle?

In this story:
After leading Georgia to consecutive college football National Championships and earning a trip to New York as a finalist for the 2022 Heisman Trophy, Stetson Bennett leaves Georgia as the most accomplished quarterback in program history. Bennett’s departure from the program leaves the Bulldogs searching for answers at the sport’s most critical position as the team opens spring practice on March 14th. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, the quarterback room is stocked with three former blue-chip prospects for new offensive coordinator Mike Bobo to choose from.
As the most experienced option in Georgia's 2023 quarterback battle, Redshirt Junior Carson Beck looks to use spring practice to establish himself as Georgia's clear top option at the quarterback position. Serving as the primary backup to Stetson Bennett in 2022, the six-foot-four Florida native was impressive in limited action in 2022, completing 74% of his passes for 310 yards, 4 touchdown passes, and no interceptions. Entering his 4th year in the Georgia program, Beck has a clear experience edge over his competitors which makes him the presumptive favorite to win Georgia’s quarterback battle entering spring drills.
Yet, while Beck may enter the spring as the favorite to win the quarterback competition, the competition will be intense. Redshirt Sophomore Brock Vandagriff cannot match Beck’s experience, but the former 5-star prospect boasts a superior level of athleticism and mobility to that of Beck which gives him an opportunity to bring an added dimension to the position. If Vandagriff can show enough improvement in his mastery of Georgia’s offensive scheme, his athleticism and versatility as a running threat give him a legitimate opportunity to challenge Beck for Georgia’s starting quarterback position.
Redshirt Freshman Gunner Stockton is the wildcard in Georgia’s quarterback competition. Stockton spent the 2022 season running Georgia’s offensive scout team, impressing coaches and teammates alike with his talent and attention to detail. While he enters the spring as the least experienced of the quarterback options, like Vandagriff, Stockton brings an added dimension of mobility to the competition.
With his combination of experience and talent, Carson Beck enters Georgia's spring practice with a clear lead in the quarterback competition, but he will have to fend off two former blue-chip prospects as the the battle to replace Stetson Bennett starts in earnest when Georgia's spring drills open on March 14th.
