What Georgia Gets in Massive Commit, Daniel Calhoun

The latest Georgia commit, Daniel Calhoun, is a massive 2024 pickup for Kirby Smart and staff. Here is what he brings to the table.

The latest Georgia commit, Daniel Calhoun, is a massive 2024 pickup for Kirby Smart and staff. Here is what he brings to the table; size, hand placement, and drive.

Calhoun very obviously has a great size to him. Standing at 6' 6.5" and weighing about 350 lbs, any quarterback would love to have him protecting their blindside. In previous discussions, Dylan Raiola mentioned this want to Dawgs Daily, and now Raiola's wish has come true.

How you can use your size as an offensive tackle is more important than just having size. Calhoun has some refined traits that will transition well into the next level. He can use his long arms to seemingly place his hands in the perfect spot every time, which is key in today's game.

In multiple plays in Calhoun's Junior season mid-year tape, we see his ability to place his hands in the perfect spot in reach blocks, down blocks, pulling blocks, etc., but to use his speed as a dominant force in his game. During his high school preparatory career, you've seen plenty from Calhoun to know that he will be able to play in virtually any system, but a system like Georgia's that prioritizes both the traditional ground and pound of inside zone with the required athleticism of the counter play, Calhoun is an ideal pairing of size and athleticism. Whether or not he plays guard or tackle is yet to be defined.

During practice, one thing is drilled into your head at the point of contact when you're an offensive lineman, "drive." With Calhoun, though, it seems this is a part of his football identity. The fifth clip against Cambridge High School shows this example perfectly. Calhoun comes off the ball for a reach block, perfectly places his hands on the defender's letters, and drives his hands and hips through the block and into the ground.

Calhoun is a polished prospect deservingly ranked as the top in-state OT. Stacy Searals and Kirby Smart will have plenty to work with once he officially joins Dawg Nation.
