What We Learned Week One of Spring Practice

We are one week into spring practice at the University of Georgia. Through just three practices, here's what we've learned about the Bulldogs' 2024 season.

We are one week into spring practice at the University of Georgia. Through just three practices, here's what we've learned about the Bulldogs' 2024 season.

Kirby Smart and his coaching staff for the Georgia Bulldogs got their first look at their 2024 roster for this week as spring practice opened up. Two practices in just helmets on Tuesday and Thursday, then putting the shoulder pads on for the first time since the Orange Bowl against Florida State on Saturday afternoon. We didn't have much media availability this week, just fifteen minutes on Thursday, but that doesn't mean we haven't learned about this roster.

What We Learned About Georgia in Week 1

Trevor Etienne and Colbie Young

The two transfers from Florida and Miami respectively had sources raving after just three practices with big explosive plays for both who are intriguing mismatches. Colbie Young lists at 6'3, but seems considerably larger with long arms and broad shoulders, despite still battling an ankle injury, the former Miami Hurricane had sources raving this week during practice. Etienne appears to be catching on to the Georgia standard relatively quickly, having arrived just this spring. He shows elite playmaking ability in open space.

STAR Battle

Coming into spring practice, one of the primary questions for this roster would be what would happen at the STAR position. It's a pivotal and diverse role, often played by Georgia's most impactful playmakers in recent history — Tykee Smith led the team in Tackles, TFLs, and INTs in 2023. Joenel Aguero, the former five-star sophomore at safety has spent two years learning the STAR position and entered the spring as the presumed starter. He is competing with Kyron Jones. Jones entered Georgia as a 6'1, 200-pound high school running back who ran 10,60 in the 100-meter. He was a take as a defensive back and has had a tremendous off-season. Jacorey Thomas is repping at the spot as well.

Freshmen Stars

It doesn't take long for names to pop up when they are this highly recruited. KJ Bolden, Ellis Robinson, Joseph Jonah-Ajonye, Daniel Calhoun, Justin Williams, Chris Cole, and Jaden Redell could all earn meaningful playing time this season for Georgia. They've all shown flashes at points during the offseason and spring practice. Five-star development is par for the course at Georgia, as is their ability to turn three stars into impactful players. Sources have indicated freshman receiver Sacovie White has been an extremely tough cover this offseason as a receiving threat. He's a violently explosive athlete in a compact 5'9 frame at 185 pounds who earned his committable offer on campus at Georgia's camps numerous times in high school.
