Georgia Tech Baseball Scores Six Unanswered Runs Against Georgia Southern to Move to 4-0

Georgia Tech will be back at home for a weekend series vs Cornell

After sweeping Radford over the weekend, Georgia Tech went on the road to face Georgia Southern in an in-state matchup. The Yellow Jackets offense had a great weekend and the pitching was solid. Logan McGuire was going to make his first start of the season tonight in Statesboro.

He would pitch well after a bumpy start, but it was Cam Jones who would be the best pitcher of the night. Jones took over later in the game and struck out seven. The offense scored six runs in the seventh and eighth inning and that would be enough for Georgia Tech to go on the road and beat the Eagles. They will now have a couple of days off and then a three-game home series against Cornell awaits.

Let's recap the night in Statesboro.

Here was the lineup for Georgia Tech tonight:

1. CF Drew Burress

2. C Matthew Ellis

3. SS Payton Green

4.1B Cam Jones

5. 3B John Giesler

6. DH Bobby Zmarzlak

7. LF Trey Yunger

8.2B Mike Becchetti

9. RF Parker Brosius

1st Inning

The Yellow Jackets only got one in at the top of the first inning, but no runs. The Eagles would have a chance to take an early lead and that is what they did.

McGuire had a very rough start to tonight's game. He walked the leadoff batter, who would steal second, and then he walked another batter to put two runners on with no outs. An early mound visit was next to try and get everything in order. A sac bunt moved the runners up and then a 2-RBI single gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead. After another steal, Georgia Southern got an RBI double to give them a 3-0 lead. That would be where the bleeding stopped, but the Yellow Jackets found themselves in a quick hole.

2nd Inning

The only baserunner that Georgia Tech got was a walk from Becchetti. They went to the bottom of the second inning trailing 3-0.

McGuire remained in the game and he was in need of a quick inning to settle everything down.

That is what happened. McGuire got through the inning quickly and Georgia Tech only trailed 3-0.

3rd Inning

The third inning saw neither team get a hit. McGuire was settling in and pitching well, but the offense still could not get going.

4th Inning

Giesler got a double in the inning for the Yellow Jackets, but Georgia Tech was not able to build off of it. McGuire headed to the bottom of the 4th still trailing 3-0.

Despite giving up a leadoff walk, McGuire struck out two of the last three batters and got Georgia Tech to the 5th inning. He had retired seven of the last eight batters at that point.

5th Inning

A leadoff single from Becchetti and a wide pitch gave the Yellow Jackets a runner in scoring position. Brosius then hit a single and Georgia Tech had runners on the corners with no outs. The tying run came to the plate and while Burress hit a fly-out, it was deep enough to score a run and Georgia Tech cut the lead to 3-1. They could not capitalize on the opportunity though and Georgia Tech left a runner stranded.

After four innings, McGuire came out and Ben King came in to take over on the mound. He was trying not to let Georgia Southern extend their lead, but he did not start off well. A leadoff single and then a stole base gave the Eagles a runner-in-scoring position, but King struck out the next two batters and appeared to have survived a leadoff hit. King walked another batter though, giving Georgia Southern two runners on base and Danny Hall decided to pull King. Dawson Brown came in and gave up an RBI single that gave the Eagles a 4-1 lead. Brown finished the inning, but Georgia Tech was back to a three-run deficit.

6th Inning

Georgia Southern changed pitchers in the sixth inning, but the Yellow Jackets offense could not get going. They did not get a hit and Georgia Southern still led 4-1.

After Brown put two runners on base, Cam Jones came into to pitch for the Yellow Jackets and he got Georgia Tech out of the jam they were in. Georgia Southern still led 4-1, but Jones prevented them from extending the lead.

7th Inning

A Yunger single and a walk from Becchetti gave Georgia Tech two runners on and no outs. Brosius grounded out but advanced the runners and that set up Burress to give Georgia Tech two runs. He hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-3. Ellis grounded into a double play, but the Yellow Jackets had their most successful inning on offense.

Jones stayed in as pitcher and got three strikeouts. Georgia Tech went into the 8th inning down 4-3.

8th Inning

Georgia Tech followed up a huge seventh inning with another big inning in the eighth. After another Georgia Southern pitching change, the Yellow Jackets went to work. Jones hit a single and then got to second on a wild pitch. An RBI single tied the game and scored Jones, Becchetti had a 2-RBI double to take the lead, and then Brosius had an RBI single to extend that lead to 7-4. It was a flurry of runs that gave the Yellow Jackets the lead.

After that big outburst from the offense, Cam Jones continued to dominate. After a leadoff single, Jones struck out the next batter and then got two more to fly out. The Yellow Jackets went into the final inning with a lead and a chance to add onto it.

9th Inning

Georgia Tech did not add to its lead and went down 1-2-3. Jones was coming back out to close out the Eagles and give Georgia Tech a road win.

Jones struck out the first two batters and then allowed a single. He needed just one more out to finish the game and he ended it with his seventh strikeout. Georgia Tech secured the road win and moved to 4-0.
