Georgia Tech Completes Sweep vs Youngstown State With 18-2 Victory

Georgia Tech is back on the field this Tuesday vs Mercer

Georgia Tech was back on the field today and they were looking to complete the sweep of winless Youngstown State this weekend.

After a slow start in the first game, the Yellow Jackets have been dominant against the Penguins, run-ruling them in all three games. Georgia Tech is the far superior team, but they were taking care of business the way you expect.

They continued that today and completed a dominant showing in a series sweep. It was another great all-around effort today and now the Yellow Jackets record improves to 11-4 ahead of a mid-week matchup in Macon vs Mercer.

Let's take a look at what happened in Georgia Tech's 18-2 win over Youngstown State today.

Logan McGuire got the start today for Georgia Tech and here is how the Yellow Jackets lined up:

1. LF Trey Yunger

2. CF Drew Burress

3. C Matthew Ellis

4. 2B Mike Becchetti

5. SS Payton Green

6. 1B Cam Jones

7. RF Parker Brosius

8. DH Jett Lovett

9. 3B Carson Kerce

McGuire did allow a walk and a single in the first inning but ended up getting two strikeouts and not allowing any runs. The offense for Georgia Tech was ready to go to work and they got on the board in the first inning.

Yunger and Burress singled to start the inning and then Yunger scored on a throwing error, allowing Burress to get to third. Ellis had an RBI  to make it 2-0, but he was thrown out at second. Becchetti then hit a solo home run to make it 3-0 and Georgia Tech was all over Youngstown State early in the game.

They were not done though in the first inning.

Green singled t hen stole second, making way for Brosius to hit and RBI single. Brosius has had a good series and is hitting well at the No. 7 spot. It was 4-0 heading to the second inning.

It was not a perfect inning for McGuire in the 2nd. He allowed two hits and a walk but was able to force groundouts to keep Youngstown State at zero runs.

Georgia Tech was not able to get a hit in the second and it was 4-0 going to the 3rd where McGuire was able to engineer a 1-2-3 inning and get the offense back on the field quickly.

Becchetti walked and the Green was hit by a pitch, giving Georgia Tech two base runners with no outs. Jones hit an RBI single to score Becchetti and make it 5-0. Brosius came through with another RBI single, Lovett walked to load the bases, and then Kerce was walked to make it 7-0. Youngstown State opted to change pitchers down seven runs, with no outs, and the bases loaded.

Yunger and Burress each got sacrifice hits that pushed the lead to 9-0 heading to the 4th inning.

After getting two quick outs, it looked like Georgia Tech was going to be back at the plate quickly, but McGuire gave up a single and then a two-run home run to give Youngstown State their first runs of the game and cut the lead to 9-2. The score would remain the same going to the 5th after Georgia Tech was not able to add any runs in the bottom of the 4th.

McGuire came back out for the 5th inning and allowed a single and a walk to give Youngstown two base runners with no outs. After McGuire got a strikeout, he forced a double play to end the top of the fifth with the score still 9-2. In the bottom of the 5th, Bobby Zmarzlak came in to pinch-hit for Lovett.

It would not take long for Georgia Tech to load the bases. Zmarzlak was hit by a pitch, Kerce singled, and then Yunger walked and that brought Burress to the plate. Burress was walked and the lead widened to 10-2. Ellis and Becchetti both scored on fielder's choices to make it 12-2 heading to the 6th inning.

McGuire's day was done after the 5th inning. It was a solid outing for him, giving up six hits, two earned runs, three walks, and five strikeouts. Riley Stanford came in to replace McGuire and he got off to a great start with an easy 1-2-3 inning.

The bottom of the sixth inning is where the game went off the rails so to speak. Georgia Tech tacked on six more runs and took an 18-2 lead.

The result was another run-rule victory for the Yellow Jackets. They moved to 11-4 and while they were playing an overmatched opponent this weekend, they took care of business, which was needed considering how the Georgia series went and the loss to Northeastern. The offense was great and the pitching was solid all weekend.

The next test for Georgia Tech will be on the road on Tuesday vs Mercer. The Bears are a solid team this season and it will not be an easy win. The game is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m.
