Georgia Tech Loses 8-5 in Tuesday's Matchup With Wofford

Georgia Tech is now 14-7 this season after another loss

It was time for another midweek matchup for Georgia Tech and the opponent tonight wasn't going to be an easy one.

Wofford came into this game with a 14-5 record and was going to be a dangerous opponent for the Yellow Jackets. After losing a series against Louisville, the Yellow Jackets were going to have to rebound quickly or risk losing to Wofford and hitting a slump.

It has been tough to find a consistent midweek starter so far this season for Tech, but the good news is that Camron Hill is healthy and he got the start tonight. Hill is a talented player and I was excited to see how his first start of the season went.

There were some noticeable lineup changes tonight. Campbell was starting at second base and hitting second, Tyler Minnick was behind the plate, and Compton was hitting near the bottom of the lineup.

Here is how Georgia Tech lined up tonight:

1. CF- Jake DeLeo

2. 2B-Kristian Campbell

3. IF- Angelo Dispigna

4. DH- Jack Rubenstein

5. RF- Stephen Reid

6. 1B- Jackson Finley

7. 3B- Drew Compton

8. SS-Jadyn Jackson

9. C- Tyler Minnick

Hill got two strikeouts in the first inning, but it was all downhill from there.

After the Yellow Jackets went scoreless in the 1st, Hill had a tough second inning. A leadoff home run gave Wofford a 1-0 lead and then a single then a double put two runners on with no outs to put Georgia Tech in deep trouble. An RBI double gave Wofford a 3-0 lead. Hill got a strikeout, but gave up an RBI single right after to put GT in a 4-0 hole in just the second inning.

Hill got out of the inning, but after a scoreless bottom of the inning from the offense, Hill was pulled for Aeden Finateri. It was not a good outing from Hill in just two innings, but hopefully he will bounce back next time out.

After Finateri got through the third, the offense looked like it was starting to mount a comeback. DeLeo had a leadoff home run to make it 4-1 and then Campbell doubled to give them a runner in scoring position. Dispigna hit a two-run homer the next at bat and suddenly, it was a one run game at 4-3.

Rubenstein, Reid, and Compton each got singles to load the bases up and it looked as if the Yellow Jackets would have a chance to take the lead. That did not happen, but it was 4-3 heading to the 4th inning.

Finateri got through another quick inning and the offense went back to work looking to take the lead.

Minnick walked and DeLeo doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs and then a sac fly from Campbell tied the game 4-4.

Wofford wasted no time striking back though. A leadoff double and then a steal gave them a runner on third with no outs and then a sac fly allowed them to take the lead right back 5-4.

After a scoreless fifth inning for the Georgia Tech offense, Cody Carwile came in for the 6th inning. Wofford proceeded to get a walk, single, and then a sac bunt to give them a 6-4 advantage.

Minnick doubled at the bottom of the inning to give GT a runner-in-scoring position, but the Yellow Jackets could not take advantage.

Jackson Vaughan replaced Carwile in the 7th. A single and a wild pitch put a runner in scoring position for Wofford and then an RBI single gave them a three-run 7-4 lead.

Tech put together some hits in the 7th, but again could not do anything substantial with them.

Vaughan breezed through the 8th to give the offense another shot at the bottom of the inning.

Campbell got a leadoff single and then got to second on a passed ball. Reid brought him home with an RBI single to make it 7-5 heading to the 9th.

Terry Busse came in and was hoping to rebound from a poor performance in the series against Louisville. Busse gave up a solo home run to make it 8-5, but did get out of the inning after that. Georgia Tech would need to score at least three runs in the bottom of the ninth.

A leadoff walk from Compton got things going and then a single from Jackson gave GT runners on first and second. A wild pitch put them on second and third with no outs and it looked like a golden opportunity for the Yellow Jackets.

Back-to-back flyouts put Georgia Tech on the brink though. A walk from Campbell loaded the bases up and the winning run came to the plate. Dispigna did end the game, but not in favor of the Yellow Jackets. Wofford won 8-5 and GT could not take advantage of their opportunity.

Georgia Tech will be back at home this weekend for another ACC series against Clemson. Game one begins Friday at 6:00 p.m. in Atlanta.
