Virginia Tech Defeats Georgia Tech 10-7 in Game One Of Series

The Yellow Jackets drop game one in Blacksburg

After a thrilling victory over Auburn on Tuesday night, Georgia Tech was going on the road to Blacksburg, VA to take on the Hokies, who is was in last place in the ACC Coastal heading into this game.

The Yellow Jackets came into this game at 20-13 and after dropping two straight series against Boston College and North Carolina, Tech needed to get back on track if they still had postseason aspirations.

Luke Schmolke was on the mound for GT today and here is the lineup the Yellow Jackets used:

1. 2B- Kristian Campbell

2. CF- Jake DeLeo

3. RF- Stephen Reid

4. IF- Angelo Dispigna

5. DH- Jackson Finley

6. 1B- John Giesler

7. C- Jack Rubenstein

8. 3B- Nicholas Romano

9. SS- Jadyn Jackson

Both teams got one hit in the 1st inning, but nothing else.

GT got on the board first in the top of the second.

Finley reached on a fielder's choice and then Giesler was hit by a pitch to give the Yellow Jackets two runners on with no outs. Rubenstein flied out to advance Finley to third and then a sac fly from Romano gave Georgia Tech their first run and lead of the game 1-0. That was the only run they got, but it was enough for an early lead.

After a 37-minute lightning delay, the game resumed, and Virginia Tech's offense went to work. A leadoff single got VT a runner on and after a strike out, another single and then a walk loaded the bases for the Hokies.

After a bases-loaded walk tied the game 1-1, the game had a delay after an umpire left with an injury and the umpire crew went to just three. A 2-RBI single gave the Hokies a 3-1 lead and then an RBI single pushed the lead to 4-1. Schmolke was done after that and Camron Hill came in to replace him. Hill got two quick outs and the game went to the 3rd inning.

GT went scoreless in the top of the fourth and the bottom of the inning is where Hill ran into his first bit of trouble.

After a quick out to start things off, Hill gave up a single and then hit the next batter to put two runners on with just one out. A walk loaded the bases and then a sac fly gave VT a 5-1 lead. An RBI single gave the Hokies a 6-1 lead as the inning ended.

After Jackson grounded out to start the 5th, Campbell got a single and the a DeLeo double put runners on second and third. Reid cut into the lead with an RBI single and GT trailed by four runs 6-2. After a pitching change for VT, they Hokies got the last two outs and it was 6-2 heading to the bottom of the 5th.

A leadoff single and then an error put runners on the corners with no outs. After GT got the runner on third out at home, and RBI double out the Hokies ahead 7-2. The next at-bat, they hit a 2-RBI double to make it 9-2 and it looked bleak for the Yellow Jackets at that point.

Cody Carwile came in for Hill after the three runs and he finished the inning with no more runs given up.

Georgia Tech needed to rally in the final innings of the game and they appeared to be starting that in the top of the 6th.

Giesler had a leadoff walk and then Rubenstein had a single to put runners on first and second with no outs. A Romano walk loaded the bases with no outs and this was a golden opportunity for Georgia Tech to make a run at cutting into the big lead.

Virginia Tech made a pitching change, but that resulted in a bases-loaded walk for Jackson to make it 9-3. Campbell and DeLeo went down before Reid reached on a fielder's choice that made it 9-4. While Tech added runs in the top of the 6th, it felt like a big miss with the bases loaded and no outs to start the inning.

Carwile pitched a scoreless 6th and then GT went down 1-2-3 with all three batters striking out. Then, another weather delay began at the bottom of the 7th.

Play resumed at 7:25 and Noah Samol came in to pitch for the Yellow Jackets. He did allow one single, but nothing else and GT went to the top of the 8th still down five runs and needing a rally.

The rally started with a leadoff walk from Romano. After Jackson struck out, Campbell singled to put two runners on and that gave way to DeLeo to blast a three-run home run to pull the Yellow Jackets within two runs.

The momentum for the rally did not last long.

A leadoff home run in the bottom of the 8th put VT ahead 10-7. It was a huge mistake at that point in the game after the Yellow Jackets pulled within two runs. Samol got out of the inning only giving up that run, but they needed at least three in the top of the 9th to extend the game.

Georgia Tech went down quickly 1-2-3 and the game was over. The Yellow Jackets drop to 20-14 with this defeat and 7-9 in the ACC. This loss moves them closer to the bottom of the ACC Coastal standings.

Game two of the series is set for a 7:00 first pitch on Saturday night.
