Georgia Tech Basketball vs NC State: Game Preview, How to Watch, Listen, Livestream, and Betting Odds
Georgia Tech is fresh off of a win against No. 3 North Carolina on Tuesday and it was one of the biggest upsets of the season. North Carolina is a team that can compete for a national championship, but they could not survive a trip to Atlanta.
Now, Georgia Tech has to do what they have had a hard time doing: building off of big wins.
It has been difficult for Damon Stoudamire's team to build off of their big wins and find consistency. They have beaten Duke, North Carolina, Clemson, and Mississippi State, but after each of those wins disappointment has followed. Can they buck that trend in Raleigh?
NC State started the year off hot, but have cooled off since, losing three out of their last four games. They did find a way to beat Miami at home this week and Raleigh has always been a tough place to play, so this is going to be a difficult game. Coming into the game, NC State ranks 79th in the latest KenPom Rankings, while Georgia Tech ranks 127th.
The Wolfpack are 9th in the ACC in PPG, 11th in field goal percentage, 11th in three-point attempts, 11th in three-point percentage, 9th in rebounding, and 4th in turnovers. DJ Horne is the leading scorer for NC State, averaging 15.2 PPG.
Defensively, NC State is 7th in PPG allowed, 7th in field goal percentage allowed, and 12th in three-point percentage allowed. Whether it is offense or defense, there is nothing that particularly stands out about the Wolfpack. They are not terrible at any one thing, but not elite at anything either.
Georgia Tech has had struggles scoring the ball, but they have been one of the best rebounding teams in the ACC. The Yellow Jackets are 12th in the ACC in PPG, 14th in field goal percentage, 2nd in three-point attempts, 12th in three-point percentage, 10th in free throw attempts, 3rd in rebounding, and 11th in turnovers. Defensively, they are 14th in PPG allowed, 8th in field goal percentage allowed, 13th in three-point attempts allowed, and 6th in three-point percentage allowed.
Tech is 5-8 against Quad 1 and Quad 2 teams this season, with Quad 1 wins over Duke, Clemson, and North Carolina and Quad 2 wins over Mississippi State and Massachusetts. The Jackets have three Quad 1 and three Quad 2 opponents remaining on its schedule (NC State is a Quad 2 opportunity). Tech was 3-14 last season against Quad 1/2 foes.
Ebenezer Dowuona, who transferred to Tech from NC State, will become the second of Tech’s current transfer players to face his former team. Tafara Gapare, who transferred from UMass, faced his former team in the Diamond Head Classic.
Four Tech players are averaging double figures in ACC play - Baye Ndongo (14.2), Miles Kelly (13.7), Kowacie Reeves, Jr. (11.1) and Naithan George (10.7). Those four players have combined to hit 46.6 percent of their shots from the floor (186-399) and 37.8 percent from three-point range (62-of-164).
NC State swept the regular-season series from Tech in 2022-23 for the first time since the 2012-13 season and snapped a four-game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets on its home floor. Tech had not lost to the Wolfpack at PNC Arena since Jan. 26, 2014, and had won four in a row there.
NC State has a 60-44 lead in the overall series which dates back to 1925. Georgia Tech has won six of the last 10 meetings, although the Wolfpack have defeated the Yellow Jackets the last three times the teams have played. The teams did not play during the 2020-21 season due to COVID issues.
