Georgia Tech vs Miami: First-Half Thoughts

After a dismal performance last week against Bowling Green, the Yellow Jackets were looking to bounce back and show they are an improved team this year under Brent Key and pull a big upset against Miami. It would not be the first time that Georgia Tech had pulled a big upset on the road under Key, as they were three-touchdown underdogs against Pitt and North Carolina last season.

Miami came into this game off of their bye week and ranked No. 17 in the country. The Hurricanes had an impressive victory over Texas A&M this season but had been largely untested outside of that. The Yellow Jackets hoped to test Miami tonight and put themselves in a position to pull a massive upset.

So what are the big takeaways from the first half of tonight's game?

1. The defense has done its job so far tonight

It has been bend but don't break tonight for the Georgia Tech defense, but they have done a good job of not breaking. Miami has not ripped off many big runs tonight and the interception by LaMiles Brooks in the end zone was huge. The defense was a huge unknown coming into this game under new defensive coordinator Kevin Sherrer, but it has done its job tonight.

It was nice to see Brooks get that interception and he is a huge reason this game is as close as it is. Miami has not found much in the passing game outside of slot receiver Xavier Restrepo

2. The offense has not been able to handle Miami's speed and physicality so far

The offense for Georgia Tech has been one of the ACC's best this season. bit the Miami defense has completely shut them down.

The running game is once again struggling for the Yellow Jackets as they only have 37 yards and averaging less than three yards per carry. Quarterback Haynes King is getting pressured constantly and made an errant throw that resulted in an interception that ended the best drive of the night for GT.

The offense is going to have to find a way to hold off Miami's pass rush more. While the Hurricanes may not have any sacks, they are affecting King and getting this offense out of rhythm.

3. Georgia Tech finds themselves in this game and with a chance to win it

Considering how last week went, Georgia Tech has to love their positioning in this game. The defense has gotten stops when it needed too in the red zone and held Miami to three points. The offense has to find a way to get something going, but the Yellow Jackets have come out and fought hard and find themselves in position for a massive upset. Brent Key has shown the ability to get road wins against ranked teams before and he could do it again here in Miami tonight.

Miami gets the ball to start the second half.
