Saint Mary's guard Aidan Mahaney enters the transfer portal

All-WCC guard led the Gaels in scoring as a sophomore

One of the best guards in the West Coast Conference over the last two seasons has gone portaling.

Saint Mary's guard Aidan Mahaney is entering the transfer portal, per On3.com. The two-time All-WCC first team guard started 50 of 69 games for the Gaels over the last two seasons and was named to both the Wooden Award and Naismith Trophy preseason watch lists heading into his sophomore season.

Despite a slow start, Mahaney helped guide the Gaels to a WCC regular season title with a 15-1 record in league play while he put up a team-high 13.9 points to go with 2.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. He was All-WCC Tournament after averaging 16.5 points on 56.5% shooting from the floor in the Gaels' two wins over Santa Clara and Gonzaga, claiming the program's first conference tournament championship since 2019.

Mahaney averaged 15.5 points in five games against the Zags in his career, including two 20-point games this past season. He put up 20 points in a 64-62 win at The Kennel on Feb. 3 and 23 points in a 69-60 victory in the WCC Tournament championship game.

Mahaney's potential departure would be a major loss for Randy Bennett. Joshua Jefferson put his name into the transfer portal in March. Saint Mary's is expected to return the WCC Defensive Player of the Year in Mitchell Saxen and the league's player of the year in Augustas Marciulionis.
