BREAKING: Texas Southern Delays Selecting Its Head Football Coach

HOUSTON - Following a special meeting called this morning at 8:00 AM CT, the Texas Southern University's Board of Regents and Dr. Kevin Granger (VP of Athletics) have delayed choosing the Tigers' next head football coach to consider additional candidates.

In a statement from TSU Board of Regents Chairman Brandon L. Simmons:

"Texas Southern University’s Board of Regents is committed to taking every opportunity to elevate the University. The Board, Interim President Dr. Mary Evans Sias, and Dr. Kevin Granger are aligned in being bold and strategic in our decision-making, and we have together decided to take additional time to consider candidates for the coaching vacancy. We appreciate Dr. Granger’s leadership of the process and look forward to announcing a hiring decision shortly."

Dr. Granger followed with a statement from his office:

"The hiring of a head football coach is a strategic decision that cannot be taken lightly. The Board of Regents and I engaged in positive discussions over the holidays. I am excited about our new leadership’s bold, strategic direction for Texas Southern University. I will be taking a few additional days to consider candidates for the coaching vacancy and will work closely with Interim President Dr. Mary Evans Sias and the Board to announce a hiring decision shortly."

Former Alcorn State head coach Fred McNair and Houston Texans legend Andre Johnson were the two candidates being considered for approval by the TSU Board of Regents.  Dr. Granger led the Texas Southern University's Head Coach Search Committee and submitted Coach McNair as their "top choice."   However, members of the board dissented in favor of Andre Johnson.
