Social Media Reacts to Illinois' Season-Changing Win Over Michigan State

Illinois football (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) apparently decided that winning a football game wasn't stressful enough, so it nearly threw away a commanding lead before escaping East Lansing, Michigan, with a 38-37 overtime victory over Michigan State on Saturday.

With its season hanging by a thread following consecutive losses to Ohio State and Purdue, Illinois desperately needed a win. And for much of the first half, the Illini looked like a team that had finally figured things out.

Illinois jumped out to a 17-0 lead, controlling the game on offense while keeping the Spartans in check defensively. For once, it appeared that Illinois fans might actually enjoy a relatively stress-free Saturday afternoon.

That was never going to happen.

The second half was an entirely different story. Illinois' defense went from looking respectable to resembling burnt toast, allowing Michigan State to claw its way back into the game. Missed assignments, poor tackling and an inability to get stops turned what should have been a comfortable victory into another Illinois football nightmare.

Things went from bad to worse when starting quarterback Katin Houser suffered an injury late in the third quarter, forcing true freshman Michael Clayton II into action.

But while the defense was busy making Michigan State look like an offensive powerhouse, Clayton provided one of the game's biggest bright spots.

Thrown into a difficult situation with the game slipping away, Clayton – a freshman – was outstanding. He showed impressive poise and confidence, keeping the Illinois offense alive when it desperately needed a spark. In a season filled with disappointments, his performance gave Illini fans something genuinely exciting to talk about.

Of course, Illinois couldn't simply win in regulation.

The game eventually reached overtime, where the Illini managed to take a 38-31 lead before Michigan State answered with a touchdown of its own. Rather than settle for an extra point, the Spartans elected to go for two and the victory.

And after spending much of the second half appearing incapable of stopping a parked car, the Illinois defense somehow delivered when it mattered most.

The Illini stuffed the two-point conversion attempt, securing a dramatic 38-37 victory and extending coach Bret Bielema's perfect overtime record at Illinois to 5-0.

Was it pretty? Absolutely not. Does Illinois have serious defensive problems? Without question.

But after a disastrous start to the season, Illinois needed a win in the worst way possible. And thanks to a remarkable freshman quarterback performance and one final defensive stand, the Illini's season still has a pulse.

It might be a weak pulse, but it's a pulse nonetheless. In the aftermath, social media buzzed with excitement about it.
