Watch Out

Another batch of preseason watch lists for college football awards were released this week. The Hawkeyes were well represented.

Kaleb Johnson was named a candidate for the Doak Walker Award, which is presented to the nation’s top college running back. The Hamilton, Ohio product rushed for an Iowa freshman record 779 yards last season.

Virginia transer Nick Jackson was named to the watch list for the Butkus Award, which goes to the country's top linebacker. Graduated Hawkeye Jack Campbell, a first-round pick of the Detroit Lions in April, won it last year.

Cooper DeJean turned up on the watch list for the Thorpe Award, handed out to the nation's top defensive back. He previously was named to watch lists for the Nagurski Trophy (defensive player of the year) and the Hornung Award (most versatile player).

On The Links

Men's golfers Ronan Kleu and Callum Macfie were named GCAA All-America Scholars on Wednesday. They met qualifying standards that included earning a Division I stroke average below 76.0, participation in at least 50 percent of team competitive rounds and maintaining a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. Honorees also had to demonstrate high moral character.

The team also welcomed graduate transfer Josh Lundmark.  Lundmark came in from Cornell University. Last year, he averaged 73.57 strokes over 23 rounds, including eight rounds at or below par.

*The press releases from the University of Iowa Athletic Department are coming at us fast and furiously. The pace stays steady through the spring.

Through the years, HN has sifted through the mass, posting what we felt would draw the most interest. It's been an inexact process, and we've missed too much.

We'll plan to post this roundup on Sunday night/Monday morning, during the busiest times of the year. It will include results from competition, awards/honors and anything else we didn't previously publish.
