Thomas Meyer arrived in Iowa City this past weekend with offers from Power 5 programs to play defensive end. He left town with a couple of new opportunities.

The Hawkeyes offered a scholarship at tight end. The Clear Lake (IA) High sophomore plays both positions for his prep squad.

"I would be fine with playing either one of them," Meyer told HN. "I try to work on both positions equally. So, I would say I’m pretty equal in terms of what position I’m better at."

He also reports offers from Iowa State, Kansas and Kansas State. They like him coming off the edge.

Meyer (6-5, 210) visited Iowa State and Kansas State last month. He saw the Hawkeyes' Spring workout during the weekend after visiting for a game last Fall.

"I liked how much they hit each other during practice. Their practice was much more physical than some of the other schools I’ve visited. The practice was really intense and got a little chippy at times, so that was exciting and fun to watch," Meyer said.

Meyer is juggling a busy AAU period with Martin Brothers, seeing college campuses and his sophomore year of high school. He plans on camping with the Hawkeyes June 4 even though he's already secured an offer.

"I would like to learn more about their offense and the schemes they have," he said.

He plans on learning more about the other schools that have offered and some that have not during college team camps in June. Researching academics at the universities also will be a priority.

"I’m not 100 percent sure (of his major) yet, but I’m thinking about being a physical therapist, so probably exercise science or something like that," he said.

As a sophomore, Meyer caught 28 passes for 309 yards and four touchdowns. He piled up 10.0 tackles for loss on defense. He averaged 14.6 points and a team-best 7.2 rebounds this winter in basketball.

At the time of publishing, Rivals, 247 and On3 did not yet rank Meyer.
