The sixth-ranked Iowa Field Hockey team got back on track last week with a pair of victories. The Hawkeyes had dropped two of their previous three matches after rising to No. 1 in the country. The week included a 2-0 victory Friday in Bloomington and a 2-1 Triumph at No. 5 Louisville Sunday. 

Milly Short and Hillary Cox notched goals against the Hoosiers. The latter came about after Dionne van Aalsum drew a penalty stroke.

Sunday at Louisville, van Aalsum's goal in the game's seventh minute  gave the Hawkeyes a 1-0 lead. In the 56th minute, the freshman found the back of the net again off of an assist from Annika Herbine. The Cardinals' lone goal came with ten seconds left to play.

“(Sunday) was a fantastic win against a very good Louisville team,” Iowa head coach Lisa Cellucci told HawkeyeSports.com. “The Hawks were dialed in from start to finish. Mia Magnotta had some world class saves down the stretch. We will enjoy this and get prepared for another important road trip.”

Magnotta, the Hawkeye keeper, saved seven shots against Louisville. She's piled up 43 this season. 

Sunday's triumph was the fifth one for Iowa (12-2 overall, 3-2 Big Ten) against a ranked opponent this season. Van Aalsum has scored in 11 out of 14 games in '23. She pushed her national-goal lead to 25.

Soccer

Iowa (9-3-3 overall, 3-3-2 Big Ten) split a pair of contests on the pitch last week. The Hawkeyes took down Maryland, 5-0, Sunday at home after falling, 2-1, against Northwestern Thursday at the Iowa Soccer Complex. 

Maggie Johnston picked up the Hawkeye goal in the Northwestern match off of an assist from Elle Otto. Otto got Iowa rolling against Maryland with a goal in the fourth minute. Kelli McGroarty, Josie Durr, Sofia Bush and Addie Bundy also found the back of the net. 

Keeper Macy Enneking recorded her 19th career shutout, which ranks third in Hawkeye history. Iowa has paced the Big Ten with 10 shutouts through 15 games this season.

Cross Country

The Iowa men’s and women’s cross country teams finished in the top-half of the final standings in their final regular-season meet at the Bradley Pink Classic on Friday in Peoria, Ill.

Senior Jack Pendergast paced the Hawkeye men to an 11th-place finish with his 25:04.4 time in the 8,000-meter red race on a rainy course. He finished 41st overall and led the men’s team for the first time this season. Iowa's Aidan King set a career best (25:18.0), while teammates Ian Geisler (25:22.1), Miles Wilson (25:28.9) and Will Ryan (25:33.0) rounded out the scoring.

Senior Amber Aesoph was the Hawkeye women's top finisher for the third time in '23, setting a new personal record (21:49.3) in the 6,000-meter red event, which was good for 30th overall. Iowa's Alli Bookin-Nosbisch (22:00.7) and Abby Ryon (22:07.4) also clocked career bests, while freshman Cameron Kalaway (22:26.3) scored for the first time this season.

Golf

Iowa men’s golf concluded round one of the Fallen Oaks Collegiate Invitational on Sunday. The Hawkeyes began Monday 11th on the leaderboard.

Graduate student Josh Lundmark, competing individually, finished as the low scorer for the Hawkeyes at 2-under par (70). Lundmark’s day was highlighted by a hole in one on No. 14.

Junior Ian Meyer was the next low finisher for Iowa at one-under par. He is in 12th place heading into Monday after shooting 71 (-1) in the first round.

Tennis

Iowa's Daianne Hayashida had her ITA Midwest Regionals run come to an end in the quarterfinals Sunday at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. The sophomore lost to Oklahoma’s Dana Guzman, 6-0, 6-1.

During the week in Lawrence, the Hawkeyes went 5-4 in singles competition and 3-2 in doubles competition, excluding the extra exhibition matches that were played.

Volleyball

Iowa Volleyball (8-12 overall, 0-8 Big Ten) dropped a pair of conference matches last week at Xtreme Arena in Coralville. Penn State took a 3-0 decision on Friday. Michigan State left town Sunday with a 3-1 victory. 

Iowa's Delaney McSweeney collected 17 kills with only three hitting errors in the matches. Nataly Moravec chipped in with 16 kills and 22 digs for the Hawkeyes. 

Women's Basketball

The Big Ten Network is debuting The B1G Trip: Iowa Women’s Basketball in Europe tonight, Monday, Oct. 16, (7 p.m. CT). Subsequent episodes will be airing at the same time on Oct. 23 and  Oct. 30. 

The show takes viewers behind-the-scenes with the 2023 national runner-up during three exhibition games on an 11-day tour of Italy and Croatia this past summer. Highlights include a pizza-making class in Naples, sightseeing on the Amalfi Coast, ziplining in Croatia and kayaking in the Adriatic Sea. Plus, a look at the game action as the Hawkeyes play their first three contests since last year’s national championship.

Baseball

Iowa baseball struck out 24 batters and piled up 22 hits in overwhelming Indian Hills, 18-2, on Oct. 9 in a 14-inning exhibition at Duane Banks Field. The Hawkeyes scored in each of the first four innings, including a five-run first. 

Davis Cop opened the Iowa scoring with a two-RBI double before Connor Hennings launched a two-run home run to left-center field. Hawkeye junior right-hander Marcus Morgan tossed two scoreless innings. Cade Obermueller used two strikeouts to set down the visitors in order in the fourth for the winners. 

The Hawkeyes begin their best-of-three intrasquad Black and Gold World Series on Tuesday, Oct. 17. Admission is free.

Softball

The Gold team defeated the Black team, 8-1, in Game 2 of Iowa Softball's Black and Gold Series Thursday.

Jena Young and junior Tatianna Roman recorded back-to-back RBI triples in a five-run, fifth inning. Young went 2-for-4 for three RBIs in the contest. Soo-Jin Berry added a pair of RBIs. Mya Clark, Andrea Jaskowiak, Maren Judisch and Haley Downe split of the mound work for the victors.

Iowa returns to action next Thursday October 19 for the final game of the Black and Gold Series. First pitch at Bob Pearl Field is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT. Admission to the game is free.

Women's Wrestling

Iowa women’s wrestling team released its '23-24 season schedule last week. The Hawkeyes were slated to play host to two home duals inside of Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Iowa opens the season with the program's first-ever dual on Nov. 4 against East Stroudsburg (PA) University. It concludes that weekend at the Princeton Tiger Collegiate Open on Nov. 5

The Hawkeyes will play host to their first-ever competition in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Nov. 12 when they welcome Sacred Heart, Presbyterian and Lindenwood. They'll play host to a second home meet on Jan. 21 with teams to be announced at a later date.

Swimming, Diving

Iowa swimming and diving head coach Nathan Mundt announced the promotion of Associate Head Coach Mona Groteguth on Thursday. Groteguth started her third season with program this semester. 

At the 2022 Big Ten Championships, Iowa had seven scoring performances and eight student-athletes garnered Academic All-Big Ten honors. In 2023, nine Hawkeyes earned points towards the team’s Big Ten Championship score and six were named to the Academic All-Big Ten list.

Groteguth joined the program after serving as an assistant coach for two seasons at TCU. While with the Horned Frogs, she helped the men’s and women’s team to back-to-back third-place Big 12 Conference finishes – the best for the program since 2012-13.
