How does Bill Self staying at Kansas affect Kentucky's chances with Tyran Stokes?

In this story:
It is coming down to the wire for the #1 player in the 2026 class, as it seems either Kentucky or Kansas will land the services of Tyran Stokes. One factor that could have swung this recruitment in the direction of Kentucky was if Bill Self decided to retire, but yesterday it was announced that Self is not going anywhere and will coach the Jayhawks during the 2026-27 season.
It has always seemed that Stokes has a better connection with the Kansas staff than he does with the Kentucky staff, and that was before Jason Hart left. Now that Hart is no longer on staff in Lexington, that is definitely the case.

The two things that have been in favor of the Wildcats is the fact that Stokes is a Nike athlete and that they have a lot of NIL money to offer the future lottery pick. Kansas is an Adidas school, which is a problem for Stokes, knowing he has a deal with Nike. It is possible to get past this, but it is hard to see Nike being a big fan of that.
Some Kentucky fans have been frustrated, saying it feels like Stokes doesn’t truly want to be in Lexington, and they might be right. While this does seem to be the case, if Coach Pope is able to pull this off and land the #1 recruit in the 2026 class, who really cares where he wants to be? Stokes also seems to have a really good connection with Taylen Kinney, who is committed to play for Self and the Jayhawks next season.
Self announcing that he will be coaching again next season is definitely tough for Kentucky’s chances, but Pope is so deep into this recruitment that there is no reason to wave the white flag at this point. I am a believer that Pope’s style of minute distribution is another factor as to why Stokes is leaning toward Kansas.

Coach Pope needs to let Stokes play well over 30 minutes per game, as he is going to be one of the best players in all of college basketball next season. It sounds like a decision for where Stokes is going to play his college hoops will be coming over the next few weeks, so Coach Pope needs to put on the full-court press to try and land this future star.
There is a narrative around Coach Pope and his recruiting ability, so if he is able to go out and land the top player in the 2026 class, it would hush a lot of the Pope doubters.
