LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After falling in heartbreaking fashion to Texas in their first game in the Empire Classic, the Louisville's men's basketball program will be ending their time in New York City against a familiar regional foe, facing Indiana in the event's third place game

The Cardinals played their best basketball since head coach Kenny Payne took over the program, but it was still not enough. Up by one in the final minute, a shot clock violation handed the ball back to the Longhorns with 7.9 seconds left. Max Abmas then proceeded to drill a fadeaway midrange jumper with 0.4 left to give UT an 81-80 victory over UofL.

As for Indiana, they ran into their first roadblock of the season against defending national champion UConn, falling 77-57 in their first outing in the 2023 Empire Classic. The Hoosiers had previously been 3-0, but all of their previous wins - which had all been at home against teams with a sub-150th ranking in KenPom - came by single digits.

This will be the 21st all-time meeting between Louisville and Indiana, with the Hoosiers owning a narrow 11-9 advantage. These two teams last met back on Dec. 8, 2018, with Indiana claiming a 68-67 win at Assembly Hall. However, Louisville has won the last two neutral site matchups, including a 94-74 beatdown on Dec. 9, 2014 in Madison Square Garden.
