ACC Announces Updated Scheduling Model Starting in 2024

In this story:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Last summer, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced a major change in the way they scheduled games. Starting this season, the league adopted a 3-3-5 scheduling format under one division, with the Atlantic and Coastal Divisions being eliminated.
Of course, with the ACC approving Stanford, Cal and SMU to join the conference starting with the 2024-25 academic year this past September, an updated scheduling model would have to come with it. On Monday, the ACC officially announced their new format.
Under the updated format, which will go into effect starting with the 2024 season and last through the 2030 season, each of the 17 teams will continue to compete in the same division. The two teams with the best conference winning percentage facing off in the ACC Championship Game.
However, a crucial difference from the previous format is that there is not a uniform number of annual permanent opponents among all league members. The new model did protect 16 matchups from the previous model, such as rivalry games.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Cal, SMU and Stanford to the ACC and look forward to having them compete beginning in the fall of 2024,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. “Throughout the entire scheduling model process, the membership was incredibly thoughtful and purposeful in building a creative, flexible and aggressive conference scheduling model while keeping the student-athlete experience at the forefront. The excitement and anticipation for our teams, alumni and fans will undoubtedly build as we look ahead to the future of this incredible conference.”
Over the next seven seasons, Louisville will play: Boston College, Georgia Tech, Pitt and Syracuse five times; Clemson, SMU and Virginia Tech four times; Cal, Duke, Miami, NC State, Stanford and Virginia three times; plus Florida State, North Carolina and Wake Forest twice.
