LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The spring game made its triumphant return to the Louisville football program on Friday.
The Cardinals gathered at L&N Stadium for the first spring game of the Jeff Brohm era, and put on display to the fans in attendance the progress that they have made over the course of spring ball.
"There’s a lot of things to learn," Brohm said after the game. "Without question we do have some key guys that can make plays for us on both sides of the ball. We just have to continue to develop on both sides of the ball as well. I think that’s the key. Working the young guys as much as you can, making sure they’re ready to go when their number is called and making sure they’re ready to go if an injury happens. If you feel like you need to improve in certain areas, then we’ve got to go out and figure out ways to prove otherwise. I do think our guys worked hard and gave good effort."
The format of the spring game was different than just splitting the roster in two, as it pit the entire offense against the entire defense. Normal scoring rules applied for the offense, with the defense earning two points for each stop, three points for a three-and-out or fourth down stop, five points for a turnover and then seven points for a turnover returned for a touchdown. The defense beat the offense, 51-30
Even with several players out due to injuries, there were still plenty of big time plays made. Tight end Josh Lifson hauled in a game-high two touchdowns, quarterback Jack Plummer went 10-of-13 for 130 passing yards and two scores, and the defense tallied three interceptions and 16.0 tackles for loss
After the spring game, Brohm, Plummer and safety M.J. Griffin took time to meet with the media. They discussed spring ball as a whole, the transitions from the previous schemes under Satterfield, the new spring transfer portal window Louisville's efforts navigating it, and more.
