In this story:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville football program is continuing to bolster their defense, as Cole McConathy has committed to the Cardinals.
Here is Louisville Report's full evaluation:
Prospect: Cole McConathy
Position: Defensive End
Measurables: 6-foot-5, 225 pounds
School: Spanish Fort (Ala.) HS
Top Offers: Colorado, Georgia Tech, Kansas State, Missouri, Pitt, Virginia
247Sports Composite Rating (Nat'l Rank): 0.8650 (949th)
Cole McConathy's Junior Year Highlights: HERE (Hudl)
Frame: He has a very long frame, even for someone who is already pretty tall for a defensive lineman. He will need to add a decent amount of overall weight and muscle tone, but he has plenty of room to do so.
Athleticism: Has a good first step, although he is a bit inconsistent with it. His lateral agility and overall speed is par for the course for an edge rusher of his frame, but he can cover a lot of ground in a hurry with his long stride.
Instincts: McConathy is the definition of a "play through the whistle" type of player, as he doesn't stop at any point during the play, regardless of the initial resistance he faces. On top of that, he is absolutely not afraid to lay the wood on a ball carrier when he has the opportunity to. He has a good burst off the line, and usually knows how to hit the gap when rushing inside, which is also assisted by a really good swim move. He demonstrates good closing speed, and his lengthy frame give him a big tackle radius.
Polish: He plays both the true defensive end spot and 3-4 outside linebacker, as he lines up in both a three-point stance and a standing edge rusher. His pass rush tool box is highlighted by his swim move, as previously mentioned, but his spin and power moves need improvement. His initial strike on bullrushes is solid, but like his burst, is a bit inconsistent. Will also need to work on his overall bend and staying low.
Bottom Line: Overall, this is mostly a developmental pickup for Louisville. He could have a high ceiling thanks to his base frame and mindset, but he will have to continue to build out said frame and improve his pass rush skill set beyond his go-to move. He likely won't be asked to contribute immediately, but there is potential here long term.
