LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville cornerback Derrick Edwards III has entered his name into the transfer portal, he announced Wednesday on social media. It is unlikely that he will play in Louisville’s upcoming bowl.

"First and foremost, I would like to thank the University of Louisville for an amazing 3 years," Edwards said in a graphic posted to Twitter. "I would like to thank Coach English, Coach Ellis, and Coach Brohm for allowing me to have a place to call home.

"I would like to thank Ms. Caroline and Deion Branch for having an outlet outside of football and treating me like family. Thank you Card Nation for all the love and support, I will forever cherish the time i had being a Cardinal."

Edwards is the third scholarship defensive back to enter the portal, following Marquis Groves-Killebrew and safety Josh Minkins, the eighth player on the defensive side of the ball, and the ninth Cardinal overall.

Dec. 4 marked the first day of college football’s 30-day winter transfer portal window. Players have until Jan. 2, 2024 to enter the portal for their permitted one-time transfer under current NCAA guidelines.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound cornerback saw minimal playing time during his three years at Louisville. This past season, he appeared in 11 games between defense and special teams, but only played 15 defensive snaps across five games. He logged five tackles for the year.

The Miami, Fla. native also hit the portal last season, but withdrew after Jeff Brohm was hired as the head coach. During his first two years with the Cardinals, he logged just a single snap on defense - coming in the 2022 Fenway Bowl vs. Cincinnati - and only 16 snaps on special teams.

Louisville will conclude their 2023 season later this month with a matchup against USC in the Holiday Bowl. Kickoff against the Trojans is set for Wednesday, Dec. 27 at 8:00 p.m. EST from Petco Park in San Diego, Calif.
