Watch: Ron English, Louisville Safeties Talk Fall Camp

In this story:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The very first camp for the Louisville football program under new head coach Jeff Brohm is progressing at a rapid pace. The Cardinals are now a week and a half into their 2023 preseason, with six practices under their belt.
A noticeable component about Brohm's first fall camp at Louisville has been the extreme competitiveness since the very first day. Despite both sides of the ball still learning a brand new scheme, there have been very few reps where the players are not going full steam ahead.
"Everybody's learning the scheme, but also everybody's going hard at the same time," safety Josh Minkins said. "I will say, the culture is pretty good around here right now. We've got a good team with a lot of good players, so people make a lot of different plays."
The safety position has been no exception. Louisville returns both their starters on the back end in Minkins and M.J. Griffin, while bolstering through the portal by adding Devin Neal and Cam'Ron Kelly. Benjamin Perry, a linebacker/safety hybrid who was also a starter last season, is also back.
"We got some guys that can cover, we got some guys who can run, and the guys have bought in and they're learning," co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach Ron English said. "It's not like all this stuff is easy, we've got a lot defensive plays in the playbook. It's a lot of stuff, and there's details to all of it. ... Coach Brohm was an NFL guy for several years, so we do a lot of NFL studies. He believes in having answers, so we'll run a lot of defensive looks. It's my job to narrow down as the game get closer, but we do run a lot."
Following the Cardinals' sixth practice of fall camp on Monday, English, Minkins and Perry took time to meet with the media. They discussed the first week-plus of fall game, adjusting to the 4-2-5 scheme, Brohm's impact on the defense, and more.
