Report: Louisville WR Coach Garrick McGee Turned Down Texas A&M Twice
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - New Louisville football head coach Jeff Brohm was able to complete his position assistant staff a couple weeks ago, but he nearly found himself looking for a brand new wide receivers coach.
According to The Athletic's Bruce Feldman, Cardinals wide receiver coach Garrick McGee had been approached by Texas A&M regarding a spot on their staff "twice in the past couple of weeks." McGee wound up turning down the Aggies on both occasions to stay with Brohm and Louisville.
Texas A&M's pursuit of McGee is peculiar, considering the Aggies already have a wide receivers coach currently on staff in James Coley. McGee also turned down an opportunity to be reunited with current A&M offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, who was the head coach of Louisville when McGee was their offensive coordinator from 2014 to 2015. McGee officially returned to Louisville back on Dec. 27.
McGee spent the 2022 season on Brohm's staff while at Purdue, and while he spent just one year with the Boilermakers, his presence made a huge difference. Purdue wide receivers tallied 2,555 receiving yards for the season for an average of 196.5 per game. Transferring from Iowa, wide receiver Charlie Jones put together a remarkable season, catching 110 passes for an FBS-best 1,361 receiving yards and the fourth-most receiving touchdowns with 12. He was tabbed as a Second-Team All-American by The Athletic and CBS.
Following his first stint with Louisville, the 49-year-old Tulsa, Okla. native spent two years at Illinois as their offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, two years at Missouri as an analyst and then their wide receivers coach, and then two seasons at Florida as an analyst and then their quarterbacks coach.
Roughly two months after he was hired following the departure of then-head coach Scott Satterfield, Brohm officially completed his assistant coaching staff back on Jan. 31.
Over on offense, his younger brother Brian Brohm will serve as the Cardinals' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, with McGee coaching the wide receivers, Chris Barclay being responsible for the running backs, Ryan Wallace manning the tight ends and Richard Owens overseeing the offensive line.
On the other side of the line of scrimmage, secondary coach Ron English and defensive line coach Mark Hagen will be co-defensive coordinators, while Steve Ellis coaches the cornerbacks. The lone holdover from the Satterfield era in Mark Ivey has moved to coach linebackers, while Karl Maslowski will be the special teams coordinator.
