Reports: Louisville RB Peny Boone to Re-Enter Transfer Portal

Boone is the fifth Cardinals to enter portal in the spring transfer window.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Another member of the Louisville football program is set to enter the portal in the spring transfer window, and this time it's a significant defection.

Running back Peny Boone, who transferred to the Cardinals this past January after two seasons with Toledo, plans to enter his name into the transfer portal according to Rivals' Marshall Levenson and On3's Pete Nakos.

Boone is the fifth Louisville player to announce their intention to enter the portal when the 15-day spring transfer window opens up on Tuesday, joining the offensive lineman trio of Lance Robinson, Trevonte Sylvester and Reuben Unije, plus defensive tackle Jermayne Lole.

The Cardinals have now had 21 players overall transfer out of the program in this cycle, not including Unije and Boone, who joined UofL via the portal earlier in the offseason.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound power back was one of the most productive running backs this season not only among the Group of Five, but in all of college football, getting named the 2023 MAC Offensive Player of the Year as a result.

Playing in all 13 of Toledo's games with 10 starts, Boone ran for 1,400 yards and 15 touchdowns on 194 carries, while also catching 15 passes for 219 yards and a touchdown. Both his rushing total and 1,619 yards from scrimmage finished eighth in the FBS.

The Detroit, Mich. native spent the first two years of his collegiate career at Maryland, but was never more than a rotational piece. During his time with the Terrapins, he logged 58 carries for 258 yards and two touchdowns across 14 games played. Boone then opted to transfer to Toledo ahead of the 2022 season, where he rushed for 439 yards and three touchdowns in his first year with the Rockets.

While Louisville has seen a lot of players transfer out, they have done a good job at countering their losses. So far, they have landed 24 commitments via the portal up to this point, sporting On3's No. 1 portal class in college football.

The Cardinals finished their 2023 season with an overall mark of 10-4 (7-1 in ACC) including a berth in the program's first ever ACC Championship Game. Year two under head coach Jeff Brohm is scheduled to kick off against Austin Peay on Saturday, Aug. 31 at L&N Stadium.
