How It Happened: LSU Baseball's Bats Get Hot in 16-6 Run-Rule Win Over Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU erased an early 6-1 deficit and blasted four homers Tuesday night, as the Tigers posted a 16-6 win over Southern in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

The game concluded after the top of the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule. LSU improved to 20-10 on the season, while Southern dropped to 10-17.

The Tigers return to action at 4:30 p.m. CT Friday when they open a three-game SEC series against Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn. Friday’s game will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and televised by the SEC Network.

LSU collected 13 hits in Tuesday’s game, including four home runs – two by shortstop Steven Milam and one each by centerfielder Derek Curiel and by third baseman John Pearson.

Curiel and Pearson each finished with four RBI, and Milam collected three hits and two RBI.

“It was a great night for the offense,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “A lot of guys contributing, a lot of extra-base hits and clutch hitting. It was good to be able to help out the pitching that way.”

Curiel’s grand slam reduced Southern’s lead from 6-1 to 6-5 in the third, and the Tigers erupted for seven runs in the fourth to seize control of the contest. The seven-run outburst was fueled by Pearson’s two-run homer and by Milam’s second solo shot of the game.

Pearson added a two-run single during the Tigers’ four-run fifth inning.

LSU reliever Danny Lachenmayer (1-0) was credited with the win, as he worked a scoreless fourth inning with no walks and one strikeout, needing only 13 pitches to record three outs.

Southern reliever Alexavier Lebron (0-2) was charged with the loss, as he surrendered five runs on four hits in 0.1 inning with one walk and no strikeouts.
