On Thursday, U-M forward Will Tschetter announced that he will be returning to the Wolverines basketball squad next season, which comes as a needed reinforcement for a team sorely in need of depth.

Tschetter, who started six games last season, was a prolific three-point shooter in high school and showcased his long range during the 2023-24 campaign with over a 50% clip from distance. Although Tschetter can stretch the floor, he has not contributed to the Wolverines in a major way, logging only seven double-digit scoring games last season.

From a wider perspective, hiring Dusty May as head coach has helped reinvigorate the Michigan basketball program. Since May’s hiring, Michigan has been linked with numerous players in the transfer portal, including Yale big man Danny Wolf. May reportedly conducted an in-home visit with Wolf recently, so the interest there is mutual. Still, Tschetter is the first player (on U-M’s team last season or otherwise) to commit to coach May and marks the beginning of a new era in Ann Arbor.

With the 6-8 forward now back in the fold, Michigan has 10+ scholarships to dole out if it hopes to field a full roster next season, so expect others to follow Tschetter’s lead in the coming weeks and months.

Elsewhere in tangentially-related Michigan basketball news is the landing spot for former U-M point guard Dug McDaniel, who announced that he’ll be playing for Kansas State next season.

New coaches on staff

Now, Dusty May will work to fill out his coaching staff in concert with rounding out a roster full of players, and he’s wasting no time in doing so by hiring Mike Boynton Jr earlier this week. Prior to accepting this position, Boynton Jr. was Oklahoma State’s head coach for seven seasons and is lauded for his recruiting chops.

Additionally, May has tabbed Akeem Miskdeen for one of his other assistant coach positions, and the two are set to reunite in Ann Arbor after patrolling the FAU baseline together for three seasons. Last year, Miskdeen was an assistant coach for a Georgia Bulldogs squad that went 20-17 overall.

At this time, there is one remaining vacant assistant coaching position left for the Michigan basketball team.
