WATCH: J.J. McCarthy Shows Elite Arm Strength In IMG Academy Scrimmage

As many states are ramping up for a fall football season, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy is primed to turn in another important campaign. Entering the year, MaxPreps has IMG as the No. 1 team in the country, and Michigan commit J.J. McCarthy joined the top-ranked squad to surround himself with the nation's elite talent.
Before that team takes on a difficult schedule, McCarthy and his teammates took part in a scrimmage to get warmed up for the 2020 season. This is what Wolverine Digest saw as important from the scrimmage:
- 27:57: J.J. McCarthy throws quick and flat out didn't see the under coverage. Short interception.
-29:34: Trevon Howard breaks on the ball and helps disrupt an incompletion.
-30:03: McCarthy dissects the defense quickly and sees the coverage. The Michigan commit lofted a quick-release TD pass to the far corner for the score.
-31:29: McCarthy hits a short crosser over the middle and Kamari Wilson breaks hard to make a would-be tackle under normal circumstances. Wilson is an explosive guy, and he showed it there.
-35:32- McCarthy reads the defense and takes what they gave him. It's a short pick up, but it's better than nothing.
-41:12- Michigan commit Greg Crippen clears the way for the running back to scamper for a 20-yard fain. He sealed the alley and sprung the RB for a big first down.
-42:10: McCarthy quickly back pedals to buy time and fires off a short out route to make a completion. McCarthy goes side-arm to help make the catch.
-44:08: Though there was a flag on the play, McCarthy bit and threw a dart to the defense on a comeback.
-54:20: Grippen and Tyler Booker stonewall a pass-rusher to keep a clean pocket.
-54:54: McCarthy hits a back-foot screen throw on time.
-56:10: McCarthy evades the pressure and scrambles off his back foot to find an open receiver streaking towards the pylon. That thow shows why McCarthy is such a highly rated prospect. It is an atypical throw.
Takeaways
J.J. McCarthy has all of the arm talent in the world. When he gets comfortable, the Michigan commit can place the ball into small windows, which is what we've seen through his offseason work at the Elite 11 Finals. Since he's with a new team, it's expected to see his timing be off, which it was. He was not quite in sync with his receivers, but that is to be expected. As far as physical tools, there are very, very few throws on the field that McCarthy can't make. He is deserving of all the hype that is placed upon him.
What do you think about Michigan commit J.J. McCarthy's scrimmage performance? Will he do better during the season? Let us know!
