EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Big Ten announced on Thursday the 28 honorees named Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2017-18 academic year. Lourawls "Tum" Nairn Jr. of the men’s basketball team and Jamie Cheslik of the women’s soccer team were selected as Michigan State’s honorees.

One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each institution. All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

Nairn (Nassau, Bahamas) captained the Big Ten Champion Spartans as a senior, becoming just the sixth three-time captain in program history. He finished second on the team with 2.9 assists per game, while also recording an impressive 3.5 assist-to-turnover ratio. He received the team’s Inspirational Player Award for the fourth-straight year, while also collecting the team’s Antonio Smith Glue and Guts Award.

Cheslik, a native of Northville, Michigan, started all 18 games for the Spartans and led the team in points with 16, improving on her 14-point finish last season. One of four team captains, she netted six goals, half of which were game-winning, and notched four assists. Cheslik played 1,633 minutes on the field, a team high. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Cheslik was named Second-Team All-Big Ten and to the United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Second Team in 2017. She was one of four Big Ten players selected to join the United States Under-23 Women’s National Team for the Thorns Spring Invitational in March.
