Strengths: Aggression is the name of the game with Hyde. He can play the ball, he can do run support, and can come up and smack people. He also has good speed and top of mind awareness. Against Notre Dame in the first quarter with 13:47 on the clock at the ND 27 the Irish had a first and ten. The Irish went away from him and he was playing up on the opposite side of the field. The play broke for 52 yards, but what you may have missed was that Hyde came across the field and made the TD saving tackle. It showed aggression and speed. Something he has plenty of.
Â
Weakness: Every DB gets burned occasionally; it is the nature of the position. However, on occasion Hyde will make mental mistakes. Rarely does he make the physical, but he can have some mental lapses. One example was in the Alamo Bowl with Texas Tech facing a first and ten at their own 25 with 8 minutes to go in the second quarter. He was playing on the left and the play was a swing pass to the opposite side. Had he turned on the jets, he could have made the play. He didn’t appear winded and after the game said he wasn’t, so his jogging during the play was surprising. He ISN’T lazy.
Â
I truly think he started watching the play rather than reacting to it. A mental mistake, but that is the weakness of this fine player.
Â
Final Analysis: I think Hyde will have a very good senior campaign. He is yet another senior that if he plays his best as Mark Dantonio preaches, the Spartans will have an excellent 2010. On top of his ability, Hyde is a listener and his teammates enjoy his attitude. He has earned the respect of his team.
