What is the biggest adjustment the team has to make with Dantonio? I am a new reader since Nick Foles became a Spartan and I love your site.
Ivan- San Antonio
Hi Ivan! I think for sure that is the hitting and physical aspect of the game Dantonio plays. I know that every time I see the guys they are always talking about being sore and about the hitting. The offensive lineman are adjusting to attacking and the entire team is expected not to hit, but to drive through and cut people in half. The entire team is learning that this staff expects you to physically punish your opponent. Fairly but physically. I for one am more excited about that more then anything else.

How is the new Spartan offense adjusting to the new pro set? Do they have the personnel to make it work or will they have to run the spread more since the personnel on hand are a better fit for it?
Chris-Washington D.C.
Hi Chris! Your right, they don’t have the personnel that this system demands. They will however run the Dantonio system, which is almost 50/50 pass run, and make it work. I think that is better in the long run and it will take some time. I can tell you that the team is 100% on board with this. Not one has complained to me and I can never say that prior. These kids have bought it hook line and sinker and MSU is going to go to war. I don’t think they will run more spread, but at the same time don’t be shocked at how much they pass.

Will Dantonio red shirt most of the recruits or play them? I know that there are many different schools of thought and wondered what his was.
Walt-Los Angeles
Hi Walt! Mark Dantonio’s philosophy is simple. The best players play. Whether it is this year or any and I think your going to be pleasantly surprised. I f you go back in the video section of the website you will see a show that the guys from SpartanMag.com and I did about this class. It may not be flashy but this is one of the most functional classes and I think you will be shocked to see how much this class contributes come fall. I think that those already here know that a push is coming and that nothing is sacred. You have to love that.

Has anyone left the program?
Robert-Palm Beach Gardens-Florida
Hi Robert! According to Coach Dantonio no one has left the program. Some guys for discipline issues are still not considered “part” of the team but they are working towards that goal. As of the last time he and I spoke there has been no attrition. Now that doesn’t mean it won’t happen it usually does. I can tell you that as demanding as football has become at MSU, I will be shocked if no one goes after spring.Â

I know that you were really excited about the punter we got when this recruiting class was announced. Why is a punter more important with Dantonio’s style then any other coach?
Jon-Detroit
Hi Jon! Aaron Bates is the young mans name and here is why he is so critical. I agree that special teams are always important to a good program. In my opinion MSU has always had a great legacy with special teams and it went to crap under JLS. Anyways Dantonio is not a risk taker. He comes to the play ground with an attitude that says my guys can beat yours up and come the fourth quarter your going to be too hurt and too scared to beat me. He likes to directionally punt and pin people back and play the field position game. For example: last season if MSU had a fourth and 1 ½ from the opponents 43 none of us would have been shocked to see JLS go for it. I would highly doubt that Dantonio would even 25% of the time. He would punt and pin them in a corned. Bates was a kicker that Notre Dame and many others wanted and picked MSU. He can also kick 50+ yard field goals and that just covers us from an injury standpoint. Most schools sign kickers late or Bates would have probably already committed to the Irish. By Charlie Weis waiting that opened a door and Dantonio got one of, if not the best kicker/punter in the nation. For sure Bates was the best for his system. I can’t tell you how huge that was. I can also tell you that Dantonio expects his kickers and punters to get down field and try to get a lick in and Bates may be a kicker but he is far from a wimp. It will be fun watching that kid down field head hunting.

I was reading a message board recently and people were talking about your interview with Dantonio. When I watched it, it appeared to me that you are very comfortable with him. I also noticed you talked about having known him for many years. Did you not like JLS or is it that you just like Dantonio more?

Ryan-Chicago

Â
Hi Ryan. I want to say this yet again. I like JLS. I have no issues with him as a person and to be frank, I found him to be very engaging. I did however question him in the Big Ten. He didn’t fit the style either on the field or off and it showed. When I went on TV and was the first to publicly call for MSU to make a change that was the worst time in my life. I like him and it was very hard but that is what my job is about. As far as Coach Dantonio I do have a friendship with him and a respect. I liked JLS but having a friendship with Dantonio makes it different. Dantonio is a man of honor and integrity and he is a top-notch human being. I also think that he gets what being a Spartan is and understands the Big Ten.  I only have one concern for Coach Dantonio. He gets it and does everything right and I am afraid that MSU fans do not fully grasp how far away from what he need to be this program has slipped. It will take five years for this program to be restored. Can Dantonio do it? Yes. Will he? I sure hope so and if I were a betting man he would have my money. My point is that we may go 6-6 and get a bowl next year, but that doesn’t make this a fixed squad. After years of recruiting a WAC system and neglect frankly, there is a lot to fix.

Hi Hondo!

Foles or Cousins? You have to let me know which one you think has the best shot.
Curtis-Grand Rapids
Â
Hi Curtis! I think Kirk Cousins is a great kid from a great family. He also comes from a very small school and I think that there are a lot if issues he has to over come. I am in no way implying moral or character he is a top shelf kid. My point is that MSU had several other QB’s they wanted and he was a last second we have to get a QB type kid and he at least can get reps at this level. My point is that he can do it, but he already comes in low on the radar with the staff regardless of what your hear. Foles is the real deal. He is a proto typical NFL QB with all the talent and all the intangibles. I think he is a great QB and has real NFL potential. Again, Cousins is a great kid, this isn’t about character it is about football and I can tell you that there is a lot of excitement about Foles.
