CB Mylan Hicks, of Detroit Renaissance Sure Would Look Good in Green and White!

Michigan State is hoping the pipeline from one of Michigan's finest high schools continues to feed high quality student athletes through the MSU football program.

Mylan Hicks, of Detroit Renaissance, will be watching two of his former teammates, linebacker Chris Norman and the versatile Dana Dixon, on the field at Spartan Stadium next season. And if history repeats itself, Hicks could be roaming the Spartan gridiron as well.

The 2010 cornerback prospect has an offer from MSU and knows the program intimately, both because of his close connection to his old teammates and because he's been on campus numerous times. The last time he made the trek to East Lansing, he got to see the annual Green and White game on an unofficial visit.

"It's a great campus," Hicks says. "They're all about winning, and ever since (coach Mark) Dantonio got there, he's been taking them to a higher and higher point and I can definitely see myself as a part of that."

Hicks says he was excited to get an offer from MSU (he got one the very next day from the Wolverines), and he points to a unique style Dantonio brings to the practice field.

"He's really hands on. He's out there with the players," Hicks says. "Coach, he's out there with them showing them technique. And of course, with him being a defensive back coach, that's my position, so I would be working with him a lot."

And what's more, Hicks says, is that Dantonio is an even better man than coach, especially when it comes to recruiting. "Coach Dantonio is a great person, and in the recruiting process, when he's recruiting me, he wants to feel me out as a person, and I respect that. And before football, he cares about the players and putting them on the right road — he's a really good guy."

Other coaches stay involved in Hicks' recruitment as well. Running backs coach Dan Enos is his recruiting coordinator, as he is with many southeast Michigan student-athletes, and Harlon Barnett, who coaches the secondary, has also impressed Hicks.

"I'm pretty much cool with all the coaches up there," he says.

Hicks also says it's gratifying to gain the attention of major programs after all the hard work he's been putting in through his three years of high school. "Definitely, because I kind of felt like I fell under the radar," he says.

And the work continues. Although the heart of the offseason doesn't keep him as busy as he'd like football-wise (school's enough for most young men, anyway), Hicks does participate in as many skills camps as he can and weight training is an ongoing preoccupation. But, ultimately, school comes first.

"I go to Detroit Renaissance," Hicks says, "one of the best schools in the state, and I feel like this school really prepares me for what's going to come in college

For now, Hicks will be focusing on improving skill, technique and speed before he shows his stuff at various camps over the summer and during his final season at Renaissance.

"Right now, I'm just working out and getting ready for my senior season," he says, "weight training, running track, just getting ready for next season."
