Keith Nichol and MSU’s Marriage Dance Needs to Come to an End!

Keith Nichol was a high caliber recruit that had committed to MSU early in his high school career. When John L. Smith was fired he changed his status and went to Oklahoma. At the time there was anger in the Spartan Nation about his choice. I said at the time, “Anyone who rips into Nichol simply doesn’t get it. This is an 18-year old kid who made the choice that he thinks is best for him.”

Â
I have never been against Nichol. In fact, all reports are that he is a great kid. With that said, by Friday, no later, it is time for this to come to an end. Keith made his choice and I support that. He went to OU. He shouldn’t be disappointed with that choice. He chose a perennial national power led by a great coach and followed by a rabid fan base. That said, I don’t think him coming to MSU is in the best interest of MSU.Â

Â
Mark Dantonio doesn’t really care what any of us think. He has told me before that people will love you if you win or criticize you if you lose and he has to make the right choices that make MSU better. I agree with him 100%!

Â
I fully support Coach D and if he chose to let Nichol come here then so be it. This long drawn out process, however, is not good for MSU and isn’t good on the team. Contrary to reports, Dantonio HAS NOT met with or told Foles and Cousins that the deal is done nor that Nichol is coming. By Friday, Nichol will have had his release for a week. That is plenty of time to make a choice.

Â
The sad part is that if the process drags on past a week (if it isn’t clear already) it is clear that MSU is not in Keith’s heart.  In my opinion, if it takes longer than a week it isn’t something burning inside of him. With that said if it takes longer than that it is O.K. It doesn’t make him a bad kid. Not everyone’s life rises and falls with the Spartan Nation, like many of yours and mine.

Â
If MSU was his burning choice I can tell you that he wouldn’t have to take longer than a week to choose and many think it should take that long. If had come out as soon as he got his release and said, “I made a mistake. MSU was in my heart and my love and I accept that,” this would be a moot point. He hasn’t. Now the process drags on and it is affecting players currently on the roster and more importantly it isn’t helping with the thought process of young men who are left should he leave MSU at the altar again or come to MSU.

Â
Let me say again, I have no issues with Keith. I wish him well. If he comes to MSU I am sure that he will be a great citizen and a good kid. The problem is that Dantonio is building with guys that want to be here. He is bringing in recruits whose fire and passion rage for MSU. Throwing someone who doesn’t share that fire (in my opinion) is not wise, and the longer the process drags the longer that reality hits everyone.

Â
Keith had a chance to come to MSU. He had another and if his indecision continues past a week, that is all that we need to hear. If he goes to UM or any other school, I wish him well, I just don’t think MSU and certainly not after a week. Whatever happens, this isn’t about him being a good kid. This isn’t about him at all. It is about MSU and what is best for them.Â

Â
Come to MSU or not, this process needs to get over ASAP. It has taken too long. If Keith were back in high school I could understand a delay in a recruit making a choice. He isn’t back in high school. He is older now. He either had a passion to be here or not, and his silence says it all. Â

Â
If he comes to MSU, of course, we will all accept it and wish him well. The point is that it isn’t the best decision for MSU (in my opinion) and the longer it drags on, the residual damage of him staying or going is already done. I get communication daily from players wanting to know what is going on. They are ready for the soap opera to end.

Â
I understand that MSU is down to 3 QBs. If Nichol doesn’t come MSU will potentially look to the junior college ranks. Adding a third QB to the same class isn’t wise in how you proportion your numbers, and waiting a second time makes MSU look desperate. Something MSU and Mark Dantonio aren’t and shouldn’t act like. MSU has incredible recruiting momentum, something they can’t afford to lose.Â

Â
If you insist on going after him give young Mr. Nichol a deadline of Friday at noon and for all intents and purposes tell him to pull the trigger or pull your offer. I wouldn’t have made the offer, pull it now. If you insist on keeping it (scholarship offer) in play, don’t wait past the week Coach!
